Special Featurette: Salome At Sunrise by Inez Kelley

Hi all, it is great to be back on the CafĂ©! When I came here with my first fantasy release, MYLA BY MOONLIGHT, you all were wonderful so I couldn’t wait to swing by again and show off the stand-alone sequel, SALOME AT SUNRISE.

Salome is a bit different from your average shifter. She is a magic spell, called from afar to serve as peacemaker for a devastated widowed warrior. Bryton is determined to free his homeland from the evil that killed his wife and in the process, die a warrior’s death. He wants to join her on the otherside of life.

Although she is a birdshifter, Salome is also a windsinger. She can harness the wind. It carries her pure spirit in a hauntingly beautiful voice that sings to Bryton, wraps around him like human arms and caresses him in soft touches. But my peacemaker is no pushover. Like Mother Nature herself, she has a wee bit of a temper.

She must. It takes a steely determination to guide a stubborn soldier away from a suicide mission and to find peace among the living. Love makes her even more determined. His peace is her mission, his love is her bittersweet reward.

SALOME AT SUNRISE excerpt

A pink tongue flicked out to her upper lip. “Not quite. They must have been blood bound, we are not. We are honor bound.”

A snort burst from him. “Figures. You’d be too easy to get rid of any other way. So, I’m stuck with a peacemaker-falcon-owl-windsinging magic spell who plays with snakes. Wonderful.”

Her giggle surprised him and he looked at her quickly. Happiness sparkled in her smoky eyes and a dimple twitched with the laugh. “I am not only a falcon or an owl. I chose those for their talents but could be a hummingbird or a pheasant.”

She linked her arm through his, casually, as any woman might do to a man she walks with, but her touch scorched him. His shoulders stiffened as he fought not to pull away. A long time ago, he’d had any number of women slide their arms into his. Then he’d claimed one and one alone. The familiar and strange sensation rattled him.

“So anything with feathers…like a duster or pillow stuffing.”

Her arm slipped from his and her eyes narrowed, shifting from stormy gray to stony granite. “Or a buzzard to pluck the flesh from your bones.”

A grin tugged at his mouth and he wasn’t strong enough to fight it. “You have a temper.”

“I do not.” Her sharp little chin thrust into the air and she stepped ahead of him.

“Yes, you do.” Devilment stirred in his belly. How long had it been since he felt this niggling urge to tease? A battle he could win rose before him and he grasped it. He was a born smart-ass. “If I make you angry enough, will you molt and drop feathers like snow?”

Salome slammed to a stop and whirled, small fists knotted at her sides and thinned brows pinched tight together. “You’re being mean.”

“Oh, now I’ve done it. You’re shortening your words.” He shuddered exaggeratedly. “I’m scared. The big bad bird lady is mad at me.”

“Stop that!”

“Careful, birdie, I wouldn’t want your mood to get any more fowl than it is.” Dust puffed as she stamped her tiny foot in indignation. Bryton cocked his hip and crossed his arms. This was fun. “If I really piss you off, will you crow like a rooster?”

Her jaw dropped then firmed. She stooped to grab a rock and hurled it at him. Only jerking his arm up prevented it from crashing into his face. He laughed. “If you get mad enough, will you lay an egg?”

Salome’s eyes flashed molten silver, her hands jammed straight out and a gust of lilac wind slapped into him. Not a brisk breeze or a dim draft, this wind was a furious funnel that lifted him from his feet and threw him through the air. His back crashed into the hard dirt, knocking the breath from his lungs and spinning stars into his vision. He lay there and let his body thump for one long second before groaning.

“You are one hell of a peacemaker, Salome.”

An Introduction to Pet Psychic Reading

by Giovanni Paolo Migliore

Pet psychic readings are done by communicating with animals through the use of their electromagnetic energy. Pet psychics are people gifted with the ability for animal communication; they are individuals who can see into an animal’s soul just by seeing its electromagnetic energy. Physical location is not a factor in pet psychic reading, as most pet psychic readers can read into the animal even if your pet is not in the same room. They can even do so even if your beloved pet has already passed away.

History of pet psychic readings

The first known pet psychic readings date back to WWI, when the Association for Research and Enlightenment began studying paranormal and psychic abilities in humans. With the discovery that there are some people who can communicate telepathically also came the discovery that humans can also connect with animals, even animals who have already passed into the next life. The number of pet psychics steadily increased in the 1930s although the practice still faced much ridicule from society. This impression changed somewhat with the launch of the TV show ‘The Pet Psychic,’ hosted by Sonya Fitzpatrick.

Why get a pet psychic reading

People request for pet psychic readings for various reasons. Perhaps the most common reasons for these include the need to correct behavior problems in the pet, to enhance the owner’s relationship with the pet, and to diagnose health problems that your pet may have. Lost pet psychic readings are also done for owners who have lost a pet and feel like their pet is sending them a message but can’t seem to understand what it is. Pet psychic readings can help deliver the message of your pet to you. They can also help you get a glimpse of what your pet will need in the future. Pet psychic readings have also been fond useful in tracking down lost pets.

How to read your pet

Most pet psychics rely on different techniques when doing psychic readings. However, most techniques rely on being relaxed so that you also transmit this relaxed energy to your pet. In some instances you may need to look into the eyes of your pet in the beginning of the session to focus on its energy. Since most pets tend to be restless, another alternative is to close your eyes and visualize your pet as a haze of white light that is sitting next to you. From here, you can begin to communicate with your pet, telling it what you want it to do or not to do and visualizing that behavior that you want your pet to take on. You can do the same if you have any questions that you want to ask of your pet. The most important thing is to remain relaxed, calm, and receptive of the answers. Getting hold of the first impression, or the first vision that comes into your mind after you ask your question, is important because the first impressions that you get are usually the correct ones. Experts suggest doing this over and over, as your ability to read your pet will eventually get better with constant practice.

If you are doing pet psychic readings online or by phone, your pet psychic will usually ask for your pet’s name, age, sex, color, and breed. This information will help them form a mental picture of your pet and assist them in feeling out your pet’s personality and energy. It's also not uncommon for another animal to come through during a pet psychic session with a deceased pet, as most animal spirits are playful and eager to communicate with the living.

About the author:
Giovanni Paolo Migliore is the author of several articles about pet psychics and pet psychic readings. He currently writes for several online publications that deal with paranormal abilities.

"I was pulled in from the start of The Omegas and Annie Nicholas didn’t let me go until the very end. And then I was looking to find out when the next book would be out. I love how Sugar isn’t a lycan, but not only does she love and protect her friends, she pushes Daedalus also. We Wanna Think Bad Things with You—True Blood and Philosophy

True Blood and Philosophy

We Wanna Think Bad Things with You

(The Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture Series)

By Edited by George A. Dunn and Rebecca Housel with series editor William Irwin

Published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

June 2010;$17.95 US;
ISBN: 978-0-470-59772-9

Does God hate fangs?

*

Is Sam still Sam when he turns into a collie?
*

Is coming out of the coffin the same as coming out of the closet?

*

Are all vampires created evil?

Vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, fairies, telepaths—True Blood has it all. In a world where supernatural creatures coexist with human beings, Sookie Stackhouse and Bill Compton wrestle with powerful desires while facing complex issues concerning sex, romance, bigotry, violence, death, and immortality.

Now True Blood and Philosophy calls on the minds of some of history's great thinkers to perform some philosophical bloodletting on this thought-provoking series. From the metaphysics of mind reading to Maryann Forrester's cult of Dionysus, from vampire politics to the nature of personal identity, and from contemporary feminism to the rights of nonhuman species, True Blood and Philosophy mines the thinking of philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas, John Locke, Immanuel Kant, Friedrich Nietzsche, and John Rawls to enlighten us on the intriguing themes that surround this supernatural world. You'll find no shortage of juicy metaphysical morsels to sink your teeth into!

Read An Excerpt:

Introduction: "If a Tree Falls in the Woods, It's Still a Tree -- Ain't It?"
Edited by George A. Dunn and Rebecca Housel with series editor William Irwin,
Editors of True Blood and Philosophy: We Wanna Think Bad Things with You (The Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture Series)

When Amy Burley gives Jason Stackhouse a quick tutorial on the "circle of life" (you know, squirrels eating nuts, snakes eating squirrels, and so on), using the decor of Merlotte's as a visual aid, he exclaims, ''Jesus Christ, I want to lick your mind!" Our boy Jason may be better known in Bon Temps for his good looks and "sex abilities," but it's phrases like "lick your mind" that draw fans to True Blood's most earnest, if sometimes tragically misguided, seeker of life's meaning and purpose (or at least his life's meaning and purpose). In fact, "lick your mind" perfectly captures the blend of smarts and sensuality in the brilliant, sexually charged HBO series that inspired us to produce the book you hold in your hands, True Blood and Philosophy.

It all started with Charlaine Harris's Dead until Dark, published in 2001, which launched her series of critically acclaimed, best-selling supernatural mystery novels and introduced the world to a most unlikely sleuth, an attractive Louisiana barmaid and mind reader named Sookie Stackhouse. Harris's work caught the attention of Alan Ball, the award-winning screenwriter and director, who built his reputation on dark and daring works like American Beauty and Six Feet Under. With a healthy dose of edgy humor and deep compassion for his characters' frailties and foibles, Ball made a career of boldly delving into taboo subjects like death and transgressive sexuality, creating works that were brazen both in their unabashed carnality and in raising tough questions about the human condition. True Blood, Ball's adaptation of Harris's Southern Vampire Mystery novels, takes the same mind-licking approach as those earlier works. In the world of True Blood, as in the pages of Harris's novels, we encounter a wonderful array of richly drawn characters struggling to make sense of their bewildering world and their own sometimes equally bewildering desires and hungers. For those of us who hunger for insight and understanding, their stories offer a lavish banquet of philosophical morsels into which we can sink our proverbial fangs and from which we can draw both sustenance and delight.

As it turns out, philosophy has a lot in common with True Blood. Like the vampires, shapeshifters, and other supernatural beings that pass through Bon Temps, philosophers are often regarded as deviant characters due to their habit of overturning expectations and tempting us to think outside conventional boundaries. Like True Blood's mind-reading detective Sookie Stackhouse, philosophers are unafraid to venture into dark corners of the human mind, where they sometimes unearth uncomfortable truths that others prefer to leave buried. And like the indomitable Jason Stackhouse, many philosophers engage in a quest for the meaning of life that often seems quixotic, an interminable pursuit that's been known to lead us down more than a few blind alleys -- as Jason himself can testify. But like True Blood and Harris's novels, the philosophical quest can also be one of life's most delectable pleasures. Don't take our word for it, though. You hold the evidence in your hands.

When you surrender to the lure of True Blood and Philosophy, it won't cost you a drop of blood, but your perception of reality may be expanded and enriched so dramatically that you'll wonder whether you somehow ingested V-Juice. Okay, maybe that's too much to expect. But we are confident that your enjoyment of True Blood will be considerably enhanced by the time you spend with us pondering some of the more perplexing philosophical quandaries raised by the supernatural adventures of Sookie and her paranormal pals. For example, "pro-living" crusaders like the Reverend Steve Newlin denounce vampires as unnatural, but what does that really mean? If it's just another way of saying that vampires are evil, then why does evil exist in the first place? And can vampires -- or any other creatures for that matter -- be considered inherently evil?

Beyond these classic questions about the nature of evil, True Blood offers a fresh spin on the vampire genre that opens a rich vein of new philosophical queries. In the world envisioned by Ball and Harris, those conundrums-on-legs we call vampires have "come out of the coffin" and are attempting to live openly alongside human beings. Given the imbalance of power between human beings and vampires (who, in addition to superhuman strength and speed, also have a troubling knack for "glamouring" humans out of their free will), can humans and vampires belong to the same political community and participate in society as equals? Are the plights of gays and other minorities similar to the situation of True Blood's vampires as they come out of the coffin and claim their place in the sun -- um, better make that in the shade? The perennial evils of hatred, bigotry, and scapegoating -- those not-so-supernatural scourges of our species -- appear in a fresh light when their victims and perpetrators include not only ordinary human beings, but also vampires, shapeshifters, "fang-bangers," fanatical disciples of the Fellowship of the Sun, and, last but not least, a maenad as beguiling as she is depraved.

And let's not forget that the same show that stimulates our thinking with such succulent moral and metaphysical quandaries is also a wickedly sexy romp through the perilous precincts of love and lust. Could True Blood possibly have something to teach us about the paths and impediments to erotic fulfillment? Granted, most of us probably have desires considerably tamer than those of the more colorful denizens of Bon Temps, but still . . .

We don't promise that True Blood and Philosophy will supply the conclusive answers to all of these questions -- or even to Jason's classic mindblower, "If a tree falls in the woods, it's still a tree-ain't it?" Philosophers have been debating questions like these since long before Godric was a twinkle in his maker's eye, and every answer has been shadowed by some doubt. It's the questioning itself that's mind-licking good. So invite us across your threshold. We want to think bad things with you!

The Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture Series:
A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, and a healthy helping of popular culture clears the cobwebs from Kant. Philosophy has had a public relations problem for a few centuries now. This series aims to change that, showing that philosophy is relevant to your life -- and not just for answering the big questions like "To be or not to be?" but for answering the little questions: "To watch or not to watch House?" Thinking deeply about TV, movies, and music doesn't make you a "complete idiot." In fact it might make you a philosopher, someone who believes the unexamined life is not worth living and the unexamined cartoon is not worth watching.

Special Featurette: Sommer Marsden

The Midnight Moon Cafe is thrilled to welcome our featured author of the month,
erotic romance author Sommer Marsden!

Sommer Marsden writes from her cozy Baltimore home, which she shares with a very patient family and a chunky wiener dog. She’s widely published in the erotica genre. Her work has appeared in dozens of anthologies, multiple magazines and numerous websites. When she’s not writing, you can find her haunting thrift stores, walking, drinking red wine and eating frozen blueberries. Often simultaneously. Visit Sommer at her blog, Smut Girl, (http://smutgirl.blogspot.com) to keep up with her dirty ramblings and daily updates about her life of controlled chaos.

Sommer's latest ebook came out yesterday!
Her mini antho Man In The Middle is out from eXcessica!

In her own words: Both of these originally appeared in Ruthie's Club (which I still miss, FYI) and both turned out to be pretty darn popular, so I smooshed them together in this piece. What do the two stories have in common? Why a husband, a wife, happy marriages and oh yeah, an extra guy...

XOXO
Sommer

Sounds very hawt, sugar! Woohoo! She also has some fabulously naughty paranormals you simply have to read, they're wicked awesome!

SL Photo Shoot

I needed to update and refine my media kit for SL, so I sat down with Aria Ireton, an amazingly talented SL photographer. The results of our photo shoot turned out even better than I expected.

I wanted a different feel to each avatar, expanding on a variety of themes that reflect the various sub-genres I write about, yet wanted to make certain the photos were enough of a similarity that readers could tell all of the avatars were me, well, the me that resides in Second Life. lol.

What do you think? Not bad huh? I especially love the
mermaid ones. :-)

SF Romance Joins The MMC Line-up

We've always been known as one of the best little places in cyberspace for your paranormal reading pleasure. Then we discovered urban fantasy and added them to our roster of books, and while there have been occasions when we added SF Romance authors under the guise as paranormal cross-over, we never officially added them to our known line-up...that is, until now.

If there are any SF romances you think we might enjoy, or you have a favorite author in the genre, please leave a comment and let us know. We hope you'll like the new 'reading room' we've built just for our fans, and will enjoy the fun journey among the stars!

SFR fun reads to get you started:

The Accidental Goddess by Linnea Sinclair
The Down Home Zombie Blues by Linnea Sinclair
The Star King by Susan Grant
Shadower by Catherine Spangler
Star Raiders by Elysa Hendricks
