Still Time To Enter MMC's Monthly Contest For January

There is still time to enter our monthly contest! Just leave a comment on any post this month and you're entered for the drawing! One comment equals one entry into the hat. So the more comments you made in January, the more your chances to win!

The prize this month is an author bookmarks and more packet, and the paperback Gentlemen Prefer Succubi by Jill Myles.

Once upon a time, Jackie Brighton was a completely forgettable museum docent.

But then she had a one-night stand with a fallen angel and was bitten by a vampire…and now she’s a succubus. She’s turned into a babe, needs sex to survive, and can put people to sleep with a touch of her fingertips.

Sounds great, right? Except for the fact that she’s caught between both the Heavenly and Infernal Host in an ancient turf-war, and now both sides want a piece of her…

Contest ends midnight, January 31, 2009. Winner will be announced February 1, 2010 here at the MMC blog. Good Luck!

Must be 18+ to enter. The odds of winning depend upon the number of participants. Contest void where prohibited by law.

We strive to make our prize winners happy! However, as with all our contests, it is the participant’s responsibility to check the blog to see if their name is announced as a winner, and/or to respond to winning notification emails in order to claim your prize.

Any prizes that go unclaimed for 30 days after the close of a contest will be placed back into the MMC prize vault, or an alternate winner will be chosen.

Heroic, Anti-heroic or just plain psycho?

Heroic, Anti-heroic or just plain psycho?
by Grace Draven

I was at a local used bookstore last month and overheard a debate between two booksellers. One liked Darcy and detested Heathcliffe. The other adored Heathcliffe and disliked Darcy. What I found interesting was the very things one found repulsive in each of these characters, the other found attractive. Each offered what I thought was good reasoning why they either liked or disliked the character and why they thought them heroic or villainous.

Personally, Heathcliffe gives me the creeps. I love, love, love the antihero, but I perceived Heathcliffe as a very mentally and emotionally unstable man with a streak of malice a mile wide. It probably didn’t help that disliked Kathy as much as him and thought they deserved each other.

However, I can from a much removed standpoint, see how he might be attractive to other readers. There’s a wild, free and rebellious nature to Heathcliffe, and also the role of the underdog early in the book. I rooted for Heathcliffe at first but quickly lost sympathy, and then actively disliked him. Honestly, I was glad when both he and Kathy bit it. Maybe then, they’d quit ruining the lives of everyone else unlucky enough to wander too close to their sphere of influence.

With Darcy, my emotions ran the opposite direction. A man born to both power and privilege yet emotionally crippled by a shyness that came through as detachment, disapproval and snobbery. There were a few times I wanted Lizzy to clock him a time or six. But he grew on me. From seeing him as a bore with a stick up his butt, I came to view him as a man of great heart and deep emotion. His would be a subtle affection. Restrained yet everlasting. Never the flair and flash of Heathcliffe’s affections, but something steadier, quieter.

All that being said, I have some friends who completely disagree with my take on these two characters (just as these two booksellers argued). They adore Heathcliffe and the earthy, consuming love he had for Kathy. They’ve said they’d be both bored and frustrated with Darcy’s restraint.

What about you? If not these two male characters, then what characters would you compare and contrast as hero types? Pick from any source—18th century literature, contemporary romance, T.V. Series, movie, etc.

The Allure of The Forbidden

What is it that makes us all want the things we know are bad for us?

Whether your forbidden craving is for rich, decedent chocolate cake or a man you just know is going to break your heart in the end? We know better, but it's not the rational part of our brain in control. Ahh no, the hormones made us do it. lol.

In the case of one of my heroines, she sees the fatal mistake lying in wait, but instead of turning the other way, she flies directly toward it and embraces the danger. Now, some might call her foolish or naive, but she also knows that the adventure, even if (and probably when) it leads to heartache, will be something amazing and the experience worth the risk.

And so I ask you, our wonderful readers, what would you be willing to do to have an illicit, blazing hot adventure with the bad boy of your dreams?

Now, we cannot deliver the guy on your doorstep (in case your boyfriend or hubby happens to be home--lol) but we do have a pampering bath spa kit for one lucky winner! Heehee.

Please leave a comment to enter to win. One winner will be chosen at random. Contest ends, Sunday, January 17, 2010. Good Luck, ya'll!

Mermaid or Whale

A good friend sent this to me and I had to chuckle a bit (for obvious reasons, lol).

Recently, in a large French city, a poster featuring a young, thin and tanned woman appeared in the window of a gym.

It said: "THIS SUMMER DO YOU WANT TO BE A MERMAID OR A WHALE?" A middle aged woman, whose physical characteristics did not match those of the woman on the poster, responded publicly to the question posed by the gym. To Whom It May Concern: Whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, sea lions, curious humans). They have an active sex life, they get pregnant and have adorable baby whales. They have a wonderful time with dolphins, stuffing themselves with shrimp. They play and swim in the seas, seeing wonderful places like Patagonia, the Barren Sea and the coral
reefs
of Polynesia . Whales are wonderful singers and have even recorded CDs. They are incredible creatures and virtually have no predators other than humans. They are loved, protected and admired by almost everyone in the world. Mermaids don't exist. If they did exist, they would be lining up outside the offices of Argentinean psychoanalysts due to identity crisis. Fish or human? They don't have a sex life because they kill men who get close to them, not to mention how could they have sex? Therefore they don't have kids either. Not to mention who wants to get close to a girl who smells like a fish store? The choice is perfectly clear to me; I want to be a whale. P.S. We are in an age when media puts into our heads the idea that only skinny people are beautiful, but I prefer to enjoy an ice cream with my kids, a good dinner with a man who makes me shiver and a coffee with my friends. With time we gain weight because we accumulate so much information and wisdom in our heads that when there is no more room it distributes out to the rest of our bodies. So we aren't heavy, we are enormously cultured, educated and happy. Beginning today, when I look at my butt in the mirror I will think, "Good gosh, look how smart I am!"

Now, being a writer of mermaid lovin' I have to say one thing. I am a whale who enjoys playing at being a sexy mermaid. And there isn't a thing wrong with that! rofl.
