Bake a Midnight Moon Cake! Prepare a Witch's Brew!

    Midnight Moon Cake

    Ingredients:

23 chocolate wafers (reserve 3 wafers for the bat wings)
3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar
2/3 cup chopped TWIX® Cookie Bars
    4 tablespoons butter, melted
2/3 cup chopped MILKY WAY® Bars
    1/4 cup lowfat milk
3 packages (8 oz. each) fat free cream cheese, room temperature
    4 large eggs
    3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
    Yellow food coloring
3 M&M’S® Brand Peanut Butter Chocolate Candies
    1 8-inch round spring form pan(s)

    Directions:

    1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Prepare the baking pan. Line the bottom of an 8-inch round spring form pan with heavy-duty foil. Grease the pan’s sides and bottom. Wrap foil around the outside of the pan; set aside.

    2. Process 20 chocolate wafers, 2 tablespoons of sugar and TWIX® Cookie Bars in a food processor fitted with a metal blade until finely ground. Add the melted butter and pulse until combined. Press the mixture evenly around the bottom of the prepared pan. Place that pan into a larger pan, such as a shallow roasting pan. Set aside.

    3. Prepare the batter by heating MILKY WAY® Bars and milk in a microwave until melted, about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Stir until smooth. Set aside.

    4. Using an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese and 3/4 cup sugar until smooth. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition

    5. Divide the batter between two mixing bowls. In one bowl, add cocoa powder and the chocolate mixture; stir until blended. Pour chocolate batter into the bottom of the prepared cake pan. Tint the remaining bowl of batter yellow. Gently spoon this yellow batter on top of the chocolate layer, covering it completely.

    6. Before baking, create a water bath to keep the top of the cheesecake from badly cracking. Carefully pour boiling water into the roasting pan until it comes halfway up the side of the cheesecake pan. Bake for 50 to 55 minutes, or until the cheesecake sets with a 2-inch jiggly circle in the center. Turn off the oven and let the cheesecake remain inside for 30 minutes with the door ajar. At this time, remove the roasting pan to a wire rack, and allow the cheesecake to cool in the water bath until it lowers to room temperature. Remove the cheesecake pan from the water bath and loosely cover it with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours before cutting into wedges.

    7. To unmold the cake, gently run a small knife around the pan’s edges; loosen the hinge, and remove the cake. Place on a serving platter.

    8. To make the bats, cut the 3 reserved cookie wafers in half. Either leave the edges jagged or, using a small cookie cutter, press out a scalloped edge. Arrange pairs of the cookie halves close together to resemble bat wings, pressing the inside tips slightly into the top of the cake. Place black M&M’S® Brand Peanut Butter Chocolate Candies in between for the bats’ bodies.

    Witch's Brew of Candy

    Ingredients:

24 pieces of Mars FUN SIZE® Variety Bag such as Chocolate Mix FUN SIZE® including SNICKERS® Bars, M&M’S® Brand Chocolate Candies and TWIX® Caramel Cookie Bars
4 cups M&M’S® Brand Chocolate Candies for Halloween, optional for decoration
8 (9 x 12-inch) sheets black or orange craft foam
    Scissors
    Non-toxic clear glue
    8 paper clips
1 large bowl, basket or container
    Raffia

    Directions:

    1. Cut 8 hat cones and brims from craft foam.

    2. To make cones, place the interlocking slots together and glue. Hold together with a paperclip while drying. Once dry, rim the bottom edge with glue and set on the brim to dry.

    3. If you like, fill the bowl with M&M’S® Brand Chocolate Candies. Nestle the hats upside down into the bowl and arrange 3 pieces of FUN SIZE® candies and raffia in each hat.

    Vampire Bites

    Ingredients:

    1 ½ cups flour
    ¾ teaspoon baking soda
    ½ teaspoon cinnamon
    ½ cup butter, softened
    ½ cup packed brown sugar
    1 egg
    Red food coloring
    ¼ cup red decorator’s sugar
    24 pieces MILKY WAY® Minis
    1 tube vanilla frosting
    Plastic wrap
    Electric mixer
    Large bowl
    Medium bowl
    2 cookie sheet pans

    Directions:

    1. Combine the flour, baking soda and cinnamon in a medium bowl. Set aside.

    2. Beat the butter and sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add the egg; beat well. Slowly add the flour mixture into the dough until blended. Add enough food coloring to tint the dough a bright red. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap, and refrigerate at least 2 hours.

    3. Preheat oven to 375°F. Line the cookie sheet pans with the parchment paper.

    4. Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to 1/4-inch thickness. Use a cookie cutter to cut out 24 lip shapes. Otherwise, you can form the dough into 24 balls and flatten each slightly to create free-form shaped lips using your hands to pinch and shape the dough. Transfer these to the prepared cookie sheets. Re-roll the scraps if necessary.

    5. Sprinkle the cookies with red sugar. Bake 7-10 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from the oven, and immediately press a MILKY WAY® Minis into the center of each cookie. Cool completely. Use vanilla frosting to pipe fangs over the candy.

    * Tip: If short on time, consider using store-bought refrigerated sugar cookie dough. Begin by kneading 2/3 cup of flour into the dough, then roll and cut according to the above directions. One roll of cookie dough makes approximately 18 cookies.

    Pumpkin Cookie Pops

    Ingredients:

1 roll (18 oz.) refrigerated sugar cookie dough
1 can (16 oz.) vanilla frosting
    Orange and green food coloring
2 cups M&M’S® Brand Chocolate Candies for Halloween
    2 cookie sheets
    25 colored craft sticks

    Directions:

    1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line the cookie sheets with parchment paper or aluminum foil.

    2. Cut approximately 30 1/4-inch slices of cookie dough. Place them on the cookie sheets. Slip a colored craft stick’s 2-inch tip underneath each cookie. At the top of each cookie and directly on the opposite side of the craft stick make a small dimple in the dough.

    3. Bake the cookies for 15 minutes. Remove from oven, transfer to a wire rack, and let cool completely.

    4. Tint a quarter cup of frosting with the green food coloring. Transfer to a resealable plastic bag, snip a small corner, and set aside.

    5. Tint the remaining frosting with the orange food coloring. Spread it on the cookie tops. Use the green frosting to pipe the pumpkin stems around the dimples. Use M&M’S® Brand Chocolate Candies to decorate the cookies like Jack-O-Lanterns.

    Spider Cupcake

    Ingredients:

1 box (18.25 oz.) Devil’s Food cake mix
1 can (16 oz.) dark chocolate frosting
1 can (10.5 oz.) chocolate sprinkles
    24 large marshmallows
¼ cup M&M’S® Brand Chocolate Candies
48 red or black licorice laces
    1 toothpick

    Directions:

    1. Prepare the cake mix according to the package instructions.

    2. Line cupcake pans with paper-liners. Fill each cup with 2/3 cup of batter.

    3. Bake in a preheated 350°F for 18-21 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack, and cool completely.

    4. Reserve 2 tablespoons of the chocolate frosting in a resealable plastic bag.

    5. Spread the tops of the cupcakes with the remaining frosting. Then, coat the tops with the chocolate sprinkles.

    6. Cut the marshmallows in half crosswise. Using the reserved frosting, attach two marshmallow pieces to each cupcake as eyes. Dot the center of each marshmallow piece with frosting and attach M&M’S® Brand Chocolate Candies. Then, attach another marshmallow piece with frosting and attach M&M’S® Brand Chocolate Candies for the mouth.

    7. Cut each licorice lace into four equal pieces. Press four holes into 2 sides of each cupcake using the toothpick. Insert a licorice piece into each hole for each spider’s legs, 8 pieces per cupcake.

    Chocolate Mice

    Ingredients:

4 (1 ounce) squares semisweet chocolate
    1/3 cup sour cream
    1 cup chocolate cookie crumbs
    1/3 cup chocolate cookie crumbs
    1/3 cup confectioners' sugar
    24 silver dragees decorating candy
    1/4 cup sliced almonds
12 (2 inch) pieces long red vine licorice

    Directions:

    1. Melt the chocolate, and combine with sour cream. Stir in 1 cup chocolate cookie crumbs. Cover and refrigerate until firm.

    2. Roll by level tablespoonfuls into balls. Mold to a slight point at one end (the nose).

    3. Roll dough in confectioners sugar (for white mice), and in chocolate cookie crumbs (for dark mice). On each mouse, place dragees in appropriate spot for eyes, almond slices for ears, and a licorice string for the tail.

    4. Refrigerate for at least two hours, until firm.

But the man who snatches Delaney from her home isn't the murderer. He's Tighe, a dangerous Feral Warrior who needs her and her visions to stop the rampages of a creature as inhuman as he is evil. More fun reads for Halloween

    Secondhand Spirits
    by Juliet Blackwell

Blurb: Love the vintage- not the ghosts

Lily Ivory feels that she can finally fit in somewhere and conceal her "witchiness" in San Francisco. It's there that she opens her vintage clothing shop, outfitting customers both spiritually and stylistically.

Just when things seem normal, a client is murdered and children start disappearing from the Bay Area. Lily has a good idea that some bad phantoms are behind it. Can she keep her identity secret, or will her witchy ways be forced out of the closet as she attempts to stop the phantom?

    Kiss and Hell
    by Dakota Cassidy

Blurb: Hell's not the only thing that's hot in the sinful new novel from the author of Accidentally Dead.

Delaney Markham doesn't just see dead people, she hears them too. And FYI-communicating with tortured souls all day can really wreak havoc on your love life. Sans boyfriend, Delaney makes the best of her gift by holding séances to make ends meet-that is until one incredibly annoying ghost just won't go away.

Besides being sinfully hot-in a college professor sort of way-all signs point to Clyde Atwell being much more than the ordinary spirit. In fact, he's a newbie demon whose first assignment is to take Delaney back down to hell with him. Yeah, like that's going to happen on the first date.

    Real Vampires Don't Diet
    by Gerry Bartlett

Blurb: Real readers love this series and its "vampire to die for"(Kimberly Raye, USA Today bestselling author of Dead End Dating)-from the author of Real Vampires Get Lucky.

Gloriana St. Claire-curvy, stylish, and undead-is spending New Year's Eve alone. And it's all because her boyfriend, Jeremy Blade, is traipsing off to parts unknown to rescue his supposed daughter from the clutches of "dangerous radicals." But just as Glory settles in for the evening, a phone call from the bodyguard of a drunk, newly-undead rock star could end her year on a crazy note.

    My Sister is a Werewolf
    by Kathy Love

Blurb: The sexy Young brothers may know a fang or two about the art of seduction, but their sister, Elizabeth, is positively mooning over a few issues of her own.

    BAD MOON RISING

Elizabeth Young's brothers think they have it rough as vampires? Ha! Two words for them: unwanted hair. What werewolf Elizabeth craves is a normal life with a husband, kids, and less shaving. Unfortunately the vaccine she's researched isn't working yet. Worse, she's in heat—and soon every dangerous wolf pack for miles around will be at her door. To buy time, she needs to have sex, and often, with the first human male she can find.

Veterinarian Jensen Adler just meant to drown his sorrows, until a stunning, leather—clad brunette made him an offer he couldn't refuse. Now he's caught up in something really weird, definitely dangerous, and, okay, extremely hot. So his new girlfriend's hiding something (and she's a little freaky about the moon), but Jensen knows true love when he feels it, and this time, he's not giving up. no matter how hairy things get.

Want something sexy to read for Halloween?

Looking for a big, naughty wolf or a bad-ass but hot vampire? Look no further! Just take a look at those covers... er... I mean, these books. Heh! Enough said! *winks*

    Covet (Fallen Angels Series #1)
    by J. R. Ward

Blurb: Redemption isn't a word Jim Heron knows much about-his specialty is revenge, and to him, sin is all relative. But everything changes when he becomes a fallen angel and is charge with saving the souls of seven people from the seven deadly sins. And failure is not an option. Vin DiPietro long ago sold his soul to his business, and he's good with that-until fate intervenes in the form of a tough- talking, Harley-riding, self-professed savior. But then he meets a woman who will make him question his destiny, his sanity, and his heart-and he has to work with a fallen angel to win her over and redeem his own soul.

    Big Bad Wolf
    by Christine Warren

Blurb: Missy Roper’s fantasies have revolved around Graham Winters since the moment they met. But the imposing leader of the Silverback werewolf clan always seemed oblivious to Missy’s existence. At least he was, until Missy collides with him at a party and then abruptly runs away—arousing Graham’s interest…and wild desires.

    BIG BAD WOLF

Lupine law decrees that every Alpha must have a mate, and all Graham’s instincts tell him that the sensual, beguiling Missy is his. Trouble is, Missy is human—every delectable inch of her. Convincing his clan that she’s his destined mate, and keeping her safe from his enemies, will be the biggest challenge Graham has ever faced. And now that he is determined to have her—as his lover and as his mate—Missy’s world is changing in ways she never imagined…

    Bound to Shadows
    by Keri Arthur

Blurb: Part vampire, part werewolf, Riley Jenson knows what can happen when vamps don’t play well with others. But she’s never seen anything like this: a series of brutal murders surrounding the latest hot spot for vampire-human hookups—and the victims aren’t just killed, they’re beheaded. Now Riley is launching into action, toying with a seductive—and highly suspicious—club owner, and finding herself in the middle of another mystery: women being killed one by one, without a trace of violence.

For Riley, solving multiple cases—in a world going mad with human and vampire passions—would have been tough enough. Instead she has two jealous lovers on her hands: Kye Murphy, the amber-eyed werewolf who makes Riley’s wolf blood howl—and Quinn, the cool, elegant vamp who has over a thousand years’ experience at fulfilling women’s desires. While she’s busy juggling these two sexy beasts, Riley’s detective work takes a stunningly violent turn. Finding a murderer is now a matter of life and death. Especially since the killer has long since found her.

    An Echo in the Bone
    by Diana Gabaldon

Blurb: Jamie Fraser, former Jacobite and reluctant rebel, is already certain of three things about the American rebellion: The Americans will win, fighting on the side of victory is no guarantee of survival, and he’d rather die than have to face his illegitimate son–a young lieutenant in the British army–across the barrel of a gun.

Claire Randall knows that the Americans will win, too, but not what the ultimate price may be. That price won’t include Jamie’s life or his happiness, though–not if she has anything to say about it.

Meanwhile, in the relative safety of the twentieth century, Jamie and Claire’s daughter, Brianna, and her husband, Roger MacKenzie, have resettled in a historic Scottish home where, across a chasm of two centuries, the unfolding drama of Brianna’s parents’ story comes to life through Claire’s letters. The fragile pages reveal Claire’s love for battle-scarred Jamie Fraser and their flight from North Carolina to the high seas, where they encounter privateers and ocean battles–as Brianna and Roger search for clues not only to Claire’s fate but to their own. Because the future of the MacKenzie family in the Highlands is mysteriously, irrevocably, and intimately entwined with life and death in war-torn colonial America.

Born of Night (League Series #1)
    by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Blurb: Awakened from a drugged sleep in a cold cell, the Princess Kiara finds herself a prisoner of the merciless marauders who threaten her father's planetary kingdom. Miraculously, a rescuer appears, but behind his fearsome mask is the handsome face of a dark avenger whose outlaw touch sets her very soul aflame.

Something different to drink on your Halloween party

For those planning a Halloween party, I'm sure you all have already viewed (and drooled) over the Halloween recipes I've posted here. Now you must be wondering what to serve for drinks on that special Halloween night, right? Well, allow me to interest you in these options. *winks*

If you have been watching the HBO series True Blood, then you recognize this. *wg* It's a replica of the Tru Blood, the synthetic blood drink for vampires. Well, at least the bottle is an exact replica. Not the drink. I mean, you don't drink blood...uh...right? Hahaha! The bottle is stained crimson red, with the words Tru Blood in the label and the matching Japanese Kanji. The red-orange soda tastes like regular soda, slightly sweet but tangy at the same time. So you can imagine how cool it'd be to serve these to the your party guests. Maybe your Halloween party can have a True Blood theme? Anyway, you can order it directly from HBO.

For those who need that extra kick, perhaps an option could be Vamp Energy (formerly sold as "Dracola") from Vampire Wines. Advertised as a supernatural energy drink, it contains Taurine, Ginseng, Guarana, Key B Vitamins, and caffeine. So if you drink this at twilight, it'll keep sure awake until dawn. Heh!

    >Now for those wishing to serve something more...shall we say... sophisticate and elegant in their Halloween party (or the selective vampire), try the exquisite wines from... where else?!... Vampire Wines. *wg* Here are just a couple from their wide selection, so I'm sure you'll find something the right one to serve at your party. They even sell Vampire Vodka! *g*
Witches' Brew! This is very good ale, trust me. *winks* And I'm sure the witches in your party will thank you for it.

Of course, for the coffee lovers or for more intimate gathering, there's ... wait for it... Vampire Coffee!!! (I know, it's too cute I had to throw this here.) There's Nocturnal French Roast, Decaf Rain Forest, Caffe Volcan Espresso, and Brazil Ipanema Dulce. Something for everyone!

    Have a wonderful Halloween!

Who says you can't laugh on Halloween?

It's October and we just love to read books that scare us. I mean, it's fun to be scared, right? But, who says Halloween can't be fun just for the sake of being fun? Vampires, ghosts, and werewolves can entertain us and make us laugh too.

    Soulless
    by Gail Carriger

Blurb: Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette.

Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire — and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.

With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London's high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?

SOULLESS is a comedy of manners set in Victorian London: full of werewolves, vampires, dirigibles, and tea-drinking.

Dead Man Talking (Pepper Martin Series #5)
    by Casey Daniels

Blurb: Move over American Idol. Reality TV has come to Cleveland and Pepper Martin is a part of it!

When Pepper arrives at a down-on-its-luck cemetery to help with a restoration project she learns, to her dismay, that there’s going to be a contest to restore the cemetery grounds. Even worse—it’s going to be the basis of a local reality TV show, Cemetery Survivor. One team will be made up of genteel Historical Society ladies and the other—Pepper’s group—will be convicts on probation. Pepper Martin in day-glo? Now that’s a fashion don’t!.

There’s also a ghost waiting for Pepper. He claims he was wrongly convicted of killing a young woman. But it seems there’s quite a bit he’s not revealing. Pepper agrees to try to clear his name, but digging for the truth could put her in grave danger....

Ghouls Just Haunt to Have Fun (Ghost Hunter Mystery Series #3)
    by Victoria Laurie

Blurb: When ghost hunter and medium M.J. Holliday appears on a television show called Haunted Possessions, she encounters an evil knife that releases a demon. Now all hell has broken loose in the haunted hotel where M.J. is staying—and it's up to her to give the uninvited guest an early checkout.

A Touch of Dead: The Complete Stories (Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire Series) by Charlaine Harris

Blurb: Cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse is no typical southern belle. She can read minds. And she’s got a thing for vampires. Which, in a town like Bon Temps, Louisiana, means she’ll have to watch her back -- and neck... Stories include “Fairy Dust,” “One Word Answer,” “Dracula Night,” “Lucky,” and “Giftwrap.”

    More Tempting Halloween Recipes

    No-Bake Spiderweb Cheesecake

    Ingredients:

    Candy spiders (optional)
    Vegetable oil cooking spray
    18 ounce(s) (about 90) chocolate wafers, finely ground (4 1/2 cups)
    1/4 cup(s) sugar
    2 tablespoon(s) sugar
    6 ounce(s) (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
    1 teaspoon(s) coarse salt
4 ounce(s) bittersweet chocolate (preferably 61 percent), finely chopped
    1/2 cup(s) heavy cream
    32 ounce(s) cream cheese, softened
    5 1/2 cup(s) sugar
    1/4 teaspoon(s) coarse salt
    3 tablespoon(s) fresh lemon juice
    1 1/2 cup(s) heavy cream, cold

    Directions

Make the crust: Coat a 10-inch springform pan with cooking spray. Mix wafers, sugar, butter, and salt in a medium bowl. Pat mixture into pan, pressing firmly into bottom and all the way up sides. Cover, and refrigerate until ready to fill.

Make the ganache: Place chocolate in a food processor. Bring cream to a simmer in a small saucepan, then pour over chocolate. When chocolate begins to melt, process until smooth. Reserve 2 tablespoons ganache for decorating, and spread the remainder evenly on bottom and all the way up sides of crust. Cover and refrigerate until ready to fill.

Make the filling: Beat cream cheese with a mixer on medium speed until fluffy, about 3 minutes. Reduce speed to low, and slowly add sugar and salt. Raise speed to medium-high, and beat until very fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in lemon juice.

Whisk cream until medium-stiff peaks form. Whisk 1/4 of the whipped cream into cream cheese mixture, then fold in remaining whipped cream. Pour filling into crust, and spread evenly. Gently tap bottom of pan on counter to release air bubbles.

Transfer reserved ganache to a pastry bag fitted with a 1/4-inch round tip. Starting in the center of the cheesecake, pipe a spiral, spacing lines about 1/2 inch apart. Pull the tip of a paring knife in a gently curved line from the center of the spiral to outer edge. Wipe knife clean and repeat every inch or so to form a web.

Cover, and freeze for at least 1 hour or overnight. Unmold cheesecake, garnish with candy spiders if desired, and serve immediately.

    Pumpkin-Shaped Chocolate Cake

    Ingredients:

2 package(s) (18.25-oz.) chocolate cake mix, plus additional ingredients as directed on package
    1 1/4 cup(s) confectioners' sugar
    1 tablespoon(s) (light) corn syrup
    4 teaspoon(s) milk
red and yellow food coloring , or orange, if available, optional
    1/3 cup(s) chocolate frosting
    1 wafer ice cream cone
1 small tube green decorating icing , optional

    Directions:

Mist two standard 12-cup Bundt cake pans with nonstick cooking spray. Prepare cake mixes as package label directs for 2 Bundt cakes. Bake as directed. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then invert cakes onto wire racks to cool completely. You can also prepare cakes one at a time using the same pan.

Meanwhile, prepare glaze: In a small bowl, stir confectioners’ sugar, corn syrup and 4 tsp. milk together with a fork until smooth. Blend in remaining 1 tsp. milk, if necessary, for desired consistency. If you like, use food coloring to tint glaze orange, or just leave glaze white.

Trim the flat side of each cake with a serrated knife so it’s even. Place one cake, rounded side down, on a serving plate. Spread chocolate frosting on top (not a thick layer, just enough to hold the two cakes together). Position second cake on top of the first, flat side down.

Stir glaze again and drizzle over cake. Invert ice cream cone into hole in top of cake to make the pumpkin’s stem. If you like, use green icing to decorate the cone and arrange edible leaf decorations around it.

    Chocolate Voodoo Cakes

    Ingredients:

    Marzipan Bones:
    1 can(s) (8-ounce) marzipan (or 7-ounce tube)

    Cupcakes:

    1 3/4 cup(s) all-purpose flour
    1/2 cup(s) unsweetened cocoa powder
    1 teaspoon(s) baking powder
    1 teaspoon(s) baking soda
    1/4 teaspoon(s) salt
    1 cup(s) sugar
    1/2 cup(s) canola oil
    1 large egg
    2 teaspoon(s) vanilla extract
    1 cup(s) brewed coffee

    Frosting:
    1 jar(s) (13-ounce) chocolate-hazelnut spread (Nutella)
    1 tub(s) (12-ounce) whipped chocolate frosting

    Decorations:
Chocolate wafer cookie crumbs, (for the "dirt")

    Directions:

For the marzipan bones: Shape 1/4 teaspoon to 1/2 teaspoon of the marzipan into bone shapes (about 50 to 60 bones). Let air-dry on a wire rack. (Can be made several days ahead and stored loosely covered.)

For the cupcakes: Cupcakes: Heat oven to 350°F. Line a 12-cup muffin pan with paper liners. In a small bowl, whisk flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In a large bowl, with mixer on medium, beat sugar, oil, egg, and vanilla until combined. Beat in flour mixture in thirds, alternating with coffee, until blended. Beat 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally, until batter is smooth. Divide batter evenly among muffin cups.

Bake for 22 to 24 minutes, until a pick inserted in cupcakes comes out clean. Let cool in pan 5 minutes before removing to wire rack to cool completely.
Gently fold chocolate spread into frosting just until combined (this will firm up frosting). Spread or pipe onto cupcakes, mounding in center. Lightly sprinkle frosting with cookie crumb "dirt" and a little edible glitter. Top each cake with 3 marzipan bones, gently pressing into frosting.

    Wicked Witch Cupcakes

    Ingredients:

24 brown mini M&Ms, plus more for filling (optional)
    Hershey's Chocolate Cupcakes
    Dirty Green Simple Buttercream
    12 chocolate sugar cones
    1 pound(s) black licorice laces, cut into 1/4-inch, 1/2-inch, and 2-inch lengths
    12 candy corns

    Directions:

Using a melon baller, scoop out the center of each cupcake and fill with mini M&Ms, if desired.

Cover the tops of each cupcake with a generous mound (about 1/3 cup) of buttercream. Insert one candy corn into each cupcake to form a nose. Using brown mini M&Ms, insert two into each cupcake to form eyes. Place two short lengths of licorice above the eyes to form eyebrows for the witch. Place the shorter licorice lengths above the eyebrows to form bangs. Place an inverted cone on top of bangs, pressing gently into buttercream to adhere. Place the longer licorice lengths under the cone hat to form the hair.

Pamela K. Kinney aka Sapphire Phelan-Love Halloween

Halloween. The time when people dreamed of ghosts, werewolves, vampires and other things of terror. For me, it’s always been my favorite time of the year. The lingering scent of the candle-lit jack-o-lantern, reading scary stories, dressing up, and trick or treat.

Nowadays, I get to write those scary stories. As both Pamela K. Kinney and under the pseudonym, Sapphire Phelan, I write different types of tales. As Pamela, I even have two nonfiction books on the paranormal, Haunted Richmond, Virginia and Haunted Virginia: Legends, Myths and True Tales. Doing the research for these books has added fodder to my imagination for future fiction.

But let’s talk about Sapphire Phelan, and how she took the Deep Ones that H. P. Lovecraft wrote and made them the stars of a different erotic paranormal. Normally, I write erotic romances, with witches, demons, shapeshifters, aliens and more, but when I jokingly told my editor at Under the Moon about a short story, ‘Dark Eyes,” that I wrote and got accepted into an anthology, The Parasitorium: Parasitic Sands, deeming it a sort of Lovecraftian tale with sex with the monster in it, she thought it would b e a great idea for an anthology. Well, I wrote the novella, Unwitting Sacrifice, but the anthology never panned out. Instead she accepted it for Under the Moon. It is in both download and print form. And yes, the heroine has sex with Lovecraftian god/monster.

I’m sure Lovecraft is rolling over in his grave!

    Blurb from Unwitting Sacrifice:
Lisa Selvey moved to Necro Bay, just on the outskirts of Chesapeake, Virginia. She moved there because of its reputation for peace and quiet. To free herself of her nightmares. But her nightmares were just beginning. . .Necro Bay was just your average American seaside town. The house she bought a normal home. The handsome man, Jacob Lindan that she met, nothing more than a sexually attractive man that whose touch made her mad with desire. Things nightmarishly changed and made her wonder if she wasn't going mad. Even worse, it made her wonder if something lurked in the shadows.

But the Lovecraft beasties aren’t the only monsters I have out for Halloween. Let’s try a tale set before and on Halloween, with a mortal who has a destiny to become a witch, but only if she allows one hunky demon Familiar to make love with her. If she doesn’t, well, let’s just say Armageddon just might kill her. Along with the planet.

Quite a dilemma for poor little Tina. But believe me, Charun will work on convincing her. After all, before he became a Familiar he had thousand years of Incubus under his belt.

    CONTEST
And in honor of Halloween, I will be giving away a download of Unwitting Sacrifice and a download of Being Familiar With a Witch. You have to answer a question. What is the name of the town Lisa comes to live in? The answer is in the post above. The winner will be chosen at random from all correct entries. Post the answer in the comments.

Contest ends Saturday, October 17, 2009 at midnight EST. The winner will be announced Sunday, October 18, 2009 here at the blog. So check back Sunday to see if you've won! Good Luck!

    October's Featured Author: Linda Wisdom

Hex is a Three Letter Word
    by Linda Wisdom

Four years ago, a snarky witch named Jazz popped into my head and told me it was time for a new journey. It’s a good thing I love road trips because this one was the beginning of a wild ride that’s still going on.

As with all journeys, there’s been some curved roads, some unexpected side paths and the road that goes straight on. Even a few speed traps along the way.

From Jazz I moved to Stasi, a witch with a gentle nature that covered up a steel spine. After all, she brought down the forest Fae, didn’t she? And now it’s Blair’s turn to strut her stuff and strut she does. Blair takes on Weres, an abusive male, and even shows a cheating man the error of his ways.

Blair is the sassy witch with a gift for revenge spells. You’ll see in Hex in High Heels just what she can come up with. Proof to never get on her bad side!

Hex in High Heels takes up a few months after Wicked By Any Other Name leaves off. This time the town is gearing up for the winter carnival, Blair is less than subtly lusting after sexy carpenter Jake and he’s not making it easy for her. And who knew he was keeping more secrets from her. Ones he isn’t able to keep for long when his Alpha mother and brother show up in town. Blair needs to make sure she’s got all her shots since there’s love lost between the Weres who want to move in and take over the entire mountain and Blair who’s going to make sure that won’t happen. As if that’s not enough there’s a bunch of elves in town that aren’t any you’d see with Santa.

Blair also learns that the Weres can be creative when it comes to battling the witch, but that’s okay. She has more than her spells up her sleeve too and the assistance of Horace, Stasi’s gargoyle and even Fluff and Puff, bunny slippers turned … well, that’s something I don’t want to give away!

The fun part is giving each witch a distinct personality and different gifts to add to their powers. To make them unique. You’ll meet future witches in Hex in High Heels. Kick ass Maggie and romance novelist Thea. Remember what I said in the beginning? It’s a journey. I can promise you that each witch will have her journey, actually more a roller coaster ride, a meeting with her mate, and the typical trials and tribulations that makes a witch’s life interesting. I’ve always said I don’t make it easy for my witches. Or maybe it’s that they don’t make it easy for themselves. But that doesn’t mean there won’t be fun, because my characters and the creatures that are their sidekicks tend to make it fun. Fluff and Puff started the insanity and there’s more to come.

My magickal journey is still going on and with luck it won’t end any time soon.

I’m leaving today for the Emerald City Conference in Bellevue, WA but taking my netbook with me to respond to any comments. And if you live in the area there will be a bookfair going on Saturday afternoon/evening. I’ll be signing my Hex series and I would love to meet you!

    :::CONTEST:::

To win a signed copy of Hex In High Heels, you must answer this question: Which witch has a talented gift with revenge spells? If you know, leave a comment with the answer. BTW, the answer is in Ms. Wisdom's above post. The winner will be chosen at random from all correct entries. So if you say you love the cover, that's great, but you will be disqualified from the contest if you don't name which witch is which! lol.

Contest ends Friday, October 9, 2009 at midnight. The winner will be announced Saturday, October 10, 2009 here at the blog. So check back this weekend to see if you've won! Good Luck!

Must be 18+ to enter. The odds of winning depend upon the number of participants.
Contest void where prohibited by law.

We strive to make our prize winners happy! However, as with all our contests, it is the participant’s responsibility to check the blog to see if their name is announced as a winner, and/or to respond to winning notification emails in order to claim your prize.

    Somethin' Going On?

Oh yep, you better believe it, sugar! lol. The gals and I here at the Midnight Moon Cafe have some cool stuff goin' on this week just for you.

To start us off, today I am going to give away a T-shirt in support of breast cancer research and several special breast cancer pins for our lucky readers to wear this month, as our way to get out the word about breast cancer and how critical it is that we fight to find a cure.

Too many women (and men, too) suffer from this terrible disease and it's past time we find a cure. So, if you are the FIRST person to comment, you'll win a cool T-shirt (sz. large). The next EIGHT commentors will win one of the pins! (contest ends Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at midnight).

In these hard economic times, I know it is rough to donate money to a charity when you need it yourselves, but I want to encourage those who can donate, to do so. I have. Cancer is an abomination no person should have to go through. And I should know. I had cancer last year.
I'm happy to say I am in remission, but many others aren't.

So please, if you can donate, or sponsor someone who is involved in the Relay For Life or The Susan G. Komen Fight For A Cure, to raise money for research, please do. ((giant hugs))

Okay, now that this old southern gal is off her soapbox, let me tell ya about some other stuff the MMC has going on this week October 5 — October 9, 2009.

Tomorrow, the MMC will have an Orientation to SL workshop— in Second Life. Test your mad witchy woo-woo skills and see how much you really know
about fictional and non-fictional witches. ;-)

While you are at it, check out the Midnight Brew interview with Hex series author Linda Wisdom over on our website. Linda will be our guest blogger Thursday, October 8, here on the MMC blog, so join us for some fun and a contest too!

Predatoress: Hungarian Bride by Emma Gabor - Book feature

Featured Book - Predatoress: Hungarian Bride by Emma Gabor

Predatoress starts in September 2003 in the ancient town of Sopron, Hungary, when one of Dracula’s spawn turns me, Emma Gabor, an 18-year-old college freshman, into one of The Undead. I become a blood-thirsty but reluctant vampire, constantly questioning my morality as I foist myself upon victim after victim.

Compelled by survival and unwilling to tread this path alone, I vampirize my three best friends, Kati, Gizi, and Eszti. We go on bloodthirsty rampages every night, luring our victims through charm and sexuality or simply overpowering them with tricks and violence.

Out on the town one night at Club Colosso for a joint feeding session with my friends, I dance with Zoltan Szabo, a genetic research fellow at the university, who is also the love object of my friends, Kati and Eszti. We form a friendship based on scientific interests and fall in love at a charity ball held in the ancient castle of Frakno. We consummate our passion! I now realize that working with Zoltan could be the key to freeing my friends and me from this terrible scourge of vampirism! I must, with great pain, hold back from telling him the truth and from making him one of The Undead...

    Paranormal Plus by Deborah LeBlanc

    Paranormal Plus
    By Deborah LeBlanc,
    Author of Water Witch

When I started delving into paranormal investigation years ago, my adventures were done alone and with little more than a disposable camera, compass, flashlight, and a set of brass balls. Over time, I collected more sophisticated tools of the trade, like an EMF detector, infrared cameras, etc. The set of brass balls remained a constant. Eventually, I joined professional paranormal investigation teams, began traveling to purported haunted locations throughout the country, and even did some scouting for MTV's Fear program.

Over the years, I've visited hundreds of cemeteries, and my camera's caught flying orbs near Poe's grave in Baltimore, squiggly strings of white light that wove through tombs in old family plots in Nebraska, and child-size shadows perched atop two headstones in Atlanta, Georgia. Oddly enough, the cemetery known as the most haunted in America, Big Woods Cemetery, offered nothing but hungry mosquitoes.

The most fascinating experience I've had in a cemetery came from a small town in Mire, La., where my maternal grandfather is buried. One evening I took my youngest daughter (who was fourteen at the time) and two of her friends out for burgers. While we're eating, my daughter decides to tell her friends about the weird things her mom does for fun . . . like ghost hunting. They grow wide-eyed, of course, and ask a million questions, their last one being, "Can you take us to a cemetery and show us how to hunt for ghosts . . . like now?"

My daughter then gives me that, "You've gotta, Mom, 'cause they'll think I'm so cool!" look. Geez . . .

Before long I had three fourteen year-olds (2 girls, 1 boy) begging -- loudly -- to ghost hunt. Although I envisioned angry parents pounding on my front door later that night, insisting I be taken away to a mental ward, I couldn't resist those cherub faces. That, and the fact that they pooled their money and bribed me with a slice of chocolate cake did me in.

Wanting to minimize any risks, I thought of the most benign cemetery I knew -- St. Theresa's in Mire, La. The cemetery sits on a corner lot in the middle of town. Beside it is a church and across the street is a gas station and Mire City Hall. Streetlights line both sides of the street, so in truth, the spookiest thing about the place is the creak of the cemetery gate when you open it.

So, armed with a digital camera and a flashlight, both of which are always in my car, we head for the cemetery. Once there, the kids stay glued to my side, whispering to each other, looking over their shoulder every few minutes as we walked amongst the graves. A car backfired in the distance, and the boy gasped so loudly, I thought he'd swallowed his tongue. We had a good laugh over that, which helped the kids to relax and eventually wonder off on their own to different tombs. All the while I'm snapping pictures, hoping for an orb or two, but getting absolutely nothing -- note the picture below.

It wasn't long before I spotted my grandfather's grave, (below). I was three when he passed away, so my daughters never knew him.

As I drew closer to the tomb, I got a sudden, overwhelming urge to 'introduce' my grandfather to my youngest. So I called my daughter over, showed her the tomb, then said aloud, "Pop-pop, (which is what everyone calle

d him) this is your great-granddaughter, Sarah." No sooner did the words leave my mouth than another urge hit. Take a picture . . . now! So I did.

And this is what showed up.

This image, which stood at the foot of my grandfather's tomb, wasn't physically seen by any of us. Had it not been for the camera, we would have never known it was there. Is this my grandfather stopping by to say hello? I don't know. But it sure is cool to consider the possibility!

In my many travels, and with the aid of better equipment, I've managed to capture oddities, like the one, as well as strange, disjointed voices on digital recorders. But after fifteen years of investigating, I still can't lay claim to having seen a full-bodied apparition. Maybe I'm too much of a Doubting Thomas for spirits to bother materializing when I'm around. I did learn the hard way, though, that you don't have to see a ghost to make it angry.

    The Great Paranormal Party Begins!

It is October 1st and that means the MMC is paranormal party central!

We have got some totally awesome games, events, music, dancing, contests, and fun for you this month! A short schedule of our highlights is posted on our website home page: http://midnightmooncafe.com

Everyday there will be something different!

The MMC's Great Paranormal Party Halloween!

One of the newest things we've added this year is *live* readings in a place called Second Life!
If you've never been to SL or haven't heard of it before, you can check out this URL and see if your computer meets the minimum requirements: https://secure-web14.secondlife.com/my/support/system-requirements/

Also, you can learn a little more about SL here: http://secondlife.com/whatis/

It can be awkward and a little tricky learning the basics, so we've got you covered with orientation classes to get you started walking, talking, and DANCING! Oh yes indeedy! Got to get your Mojo Movin' and we'll help show you how. That way you'll be ready for the events we have planned closer to the end of the month.

Also, you can download this file to learn more about the basics of SL: https://secure-web8.secondlife.com/my/support/quickstart/?lang=en-US

The SL orientation scheduled days are posted on the MMC website home page as well.

But not to worry if you can't do SL, there will be fun aplenty here at the blog, including a scavenger hunt, trivia contests, chats in our chat pit over on the website, and other cool stuff, so sit back and enjoy the best season of all!

Another New Change: We've also made a few changes you might want to note. Due to our busy schedules and time constraints, we now only do one featured Midnight Brew interview a month. The Midnight Brew has also been moved to the website so it can stay up all month long.

Instead of a 'Brew contest, the MB featured author will have their own blogging day within the month, so there will still be a contest on the blog. This month's featured Midnight Brew guest author is MMC friend, author Linda Wisdom. Her 'Brew is *live* over at the MMC website. Check it out: http://www.midnightmooncafe.com/featured

Mark your calendars for Thursday, October 8, when Linda joins us to blog about her latest book and her latest news...she might even show us her new tattoo.

Oh and just for fun, check out the movie trailer for one of this Halloween season's scarier flicks:
