| Dating Someone New - 3 Steps to See If You Are Ready to Start a Relationship With a New Person By Connie Ragen Green How will you know when it is time to begin dating again? If you are a baby boomer and have been out of the dating scene for many years, you may be wondering if you will ever be ready to take that step and meet the right person again. As we get older our lives become much more complicated. Dealing with work, raising children, caring for elderly parents, and thinking about our own health and retirement can be overwhelming under the best of circumstances. But you owe it to yourself to get on with your life and find that special person to share your life with. Here are some ways to get started if you are not sure you are ready for a new relationship. * Find someone of the opposite sex, who is also single, to go with on a practice date one evening. Tell this friend that you want to start dating again and that you want to see what the experience will feel like. You can go to dinner and a movie and just get a feeling for what it is like to be alone with someone in this type of setting. * If this feels right to you, ask your friends to suggest someone who may be available and interested in going on a date. Your friends are usually more than happy to set you up with someone they think would be right for you. * Don't go too quickly. Think about the qualities you would like in a new person, and write them down. This gives you an opportunity to quantify the traits and characteristics of the person you may want to share your life with. If you are serious about wanting a new relationship, you will know it after you have taken the steps I have listed above. You will know because of the way you feel. Always think about how you are feeling and let that be your guide to starting a new relationship of any kind. And now I invite you to learn more by visiting http://www.startinganewrelationship.com to see what kinds of questions couples should ask each other to make sure they are compatible and the relationship will be a lasting one. The Strigoi are closing in, and the Academy's not taking any risks....This year, St. Vlad's annual holiday ski trip is mandatory. Speaking of friends, the only two Zoey has left are undead and unMarked. And Neferet has declared war on humans, which Zoey knows in her heart is wrong. But will anyone listen to her? Zoey's adventures at vampyre finishing school take a wild and dangerous turn as loyalties are tested and shocking true intentions come to light in PC and Kristin Cast's spellbinding fourth House of Night novel. by Ellen Schreiber Blurb: When Raven returns to Hipsterville's cryptic goth haunt, the Coffin Club, she discovers a secret door to another disco-"The Dungeon"-that is inhabited by vampires only. Raven learns that the nefarious Jagger Maxwell has welcomed the vampire clan into the club and has gained the popularity he missed in Romania. He is poised to take over Hipsterville, until a new vampire named Phoenix challenges him for control of the Coffin Club. Unbeknownst to Alexander, Raven becomes caught up in the clash, entranced by the hypnotic vampire culture of the Underworld. A surprising twist at the end reveals that Phoenix is really Alexander! How could you run, how could you fight, when doing so would hurt that beloved one? If your life was all you had to give, how could you not give it? If it was someone you truly loved? To be irrevocably in love with a vampire is both fantasy and nightmare woven into a dangerously heightened reality for Bella Swan. Pulled in one direction by her intense passion for Edward Cullen, and in another by her profound connection to werewolf Jacob Black, a tumultuous year of temptation, loss, and strife have led her to the ultimate turning point. Her imminent choice to either join the dark but seductive world of immortals or to pursue a fully human life has become the thread from which the fates of two tribes hangs. Now that Bella has made her decision, a startling chain of unprecedented events is about to unfold with potentially devastating, and unfathomable, consequences. Just when the frayed strands of Bella's life-first discovered in Twilight, then scattered and torn in New Moon and Eclipse-seem ready to heal and knit together, could they be destroyed... forever? by Cassandra Clare Blurb: When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Clary knows she should call the police, but it's hard to explain a murder when the body disappears into thin air and the murderers are invisible to everyone but Clary. Equally startled by her ability to see them, the murderers explain themselves as Shadowhunters: a secret tribe of warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. Within twenty-four hours, Clary's mother disappears and Clary herself is almost killed by a grotesque demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know.... by Lynne Ewing Blurb: Vanessa, Serena, Jimena, Catty, and Tiana are five seemingly ordinary girls from Los Angeles. But the truth is that they are all far from ordinary. They each have a secret power that separates them from others" and makes them Daughters of the Moon. Now, on the eve of Vanessa's seventeenth birthday, the Daughters face their final battle against the evil Atrox. But in saving the world will the Daughters lose each other? by Meg Cabot Blurb: What is a girl to do when she has the choice of having the one she loves by her side or realizing that he is simply the ghost of someone who was killed in the nineteenth century and needs to be let go? Suze Simon, a mediator, has the powers to communicate with the dead and she has fallen in love with Jesse, a handsome ghost. Will Suze follow her heart and keep Jesse's ghost by her side? by Rachel Caine Blurb: In the town of Morganville, vampires and humans live in relative peace. ![]() Squee! Okay, got that outta my system. LOL Sorry, but one of the best parts of being a writer is typing those fabulous two words...the end. :P The other best part of being a writer is getting to see your latest cover for the first time. I got this in today's mail and had to share the thrill. Here's the blurb, btw. When a mafia don’s bride-to-be goes missing, Peter Varien is hired to find her. Varien, an ex-cop turned private eye, takes the job despite the warning bells going off in his head. He manages to track her down to a nightclub in Memphis, belting out jazzy torch songs with the boys in the band. She is every man’s wet dream, every man’s desire, with a body born of sin and a voice that enthralls men, putting them under a sexual spell. But it’s a spell he’s determined not to fall under. Vivilyn Ondine is having the time of her life, given the power over human men through the control she wields as a sea siren. She’s never fallen in love, never truly surrendered– until now. Peter and Vivilyn are in a race against time, and must join forces to defeat a dangerous enemy who will stop at nothing, even murder. And here is the picture I used as inspiration for Peter, the hero from my book…

| So I Dated a Serial Texter By Liza Keyne As a 28 year old living in Chicago, I admit that I absolutely use text messaging to communicate with friends, family, and co-workers. For me, texting is great for sending and receiving short messages to and from people I already know. It's perfect for corresponding with basic questions: where are you, what time are you picking me up, who is this weirdo that is talking to me, how did I get home last night? It's also ideal for sharing funny moments that aren't worthy of a full conversation; such as, "You will not believe that hot tranny mess I just saw on Belmont and Halsted." Believe me; I have been swept up in this texting whirlwind. It wasn't until recently that I discovered how much texting has slithered its way into the dating world. It seems that out of nowhere, text messaging has somehow become a dating norm. It got me thinking: when did text messaging take over for a good old fashioned relationship? I recently dated a guy who we'll call "Mr. Text," who used text messaging as his primary form of communication. Mr. Text truly lived up to his name: he was aloof, brief, and hard to understand at times. I should have been suspicious after our first date when he text me immediately afterwards what a great time he had. Unfortunately for me, Mr. Text was also devastatingly good looking. This may be why I ignored all of the serial texter warning signs. When I would call him and leave a voice mail, he would almost always text me back. Mr. Text also used texting for in-depth conversations about how he was feeling in regards to our relationship. He revealed to me through text after our second date why he was so closed off and guarded. I thought it was odd at first, but his good looks and cute texts kept me coming back for more. Mr. Text sent me texts constantly for about a month. The messages were either short and distant, or flirty and fun. I played along with it for a while because I didn't know him very well and it seemed to be the best way to get in touch with him. After weeks of going on multiple dates, I grew frustrated with how impersonal my relationship with Mr. Text truly was. Everything about our rapport in person felt aloof, closed off, and vague. It was only through the texting that Mr. Text was able to flirt with me and share how much he apparently liked me. The whole thing felt detached, just like a text message should be. One day, I met Mr. Text after work for drinks and asked him what he wanted out of this relationship. Did he want to keep it casual, or was he looking for more? I honestly couldn't read his signals, so I needed to hear it in person. He said he didn't have an answer to my question and left it at that. The next day, I received a text from him stating he needed some time alone to figure out what he wanted. He felt that our face to face time was frustrating and unclear. And just like that, Mr. Text deleted me from his life. It blows my mind how easily someone like Mr. Text can disconnect themselves from a relationship in two brief sentences. I find it creepy how serial texters hide behind their phones so they don't have to deal with any real consequences of what they write. It's truly cowardly. They can type whatever they want and not have to hear any form of rejection, emotions, or awkward responses. Just type, send, and delete, and all of their problems are gone. Well, "FYI" to Mr. Text and all the serial texters ... there is no excuse for using text messaging as a replacement for serious conversations! Significant talks should always be done in person or over the phone. What ever happened to the old fashioned break up phone call? If you have a few "min" to text the person you are dating that you're just not that into them, then you have a moment to pick up the phone and show them some respect. I'd much rather be rejected by an actual person instead of a tiny screen. My advice to anyone who is dating a serial texter...abort, abort, abort! We may be living in the age of technology, but common courtesy and good manners don't need to be deleted from our lives. Today's guest spun fanciful tales for her younger brothers as early as the age of eleven. Growing up in the Catskill Mountains of New York, then the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, she found enough magic in the rugged peaks to keep her imagination fueled for years. Now making her home in North Texas, she shares her life with her hero-like husband and two doting dogs. She has written five short contemporaries for Kensington Books - Precious Gems and also writes long paranormals for Silhouette Nocturnes and short contemporaries for Silhouette Intimate Moments. The Midnight Moon Café has the pleasure to introduce you Ms. Karen Whiddon. Karen: I had written five short contemporary romances for Kensington’s Precious Gems line and I wanted to try something different. So I sat down and wrote a book of my heart – Powerful Magic – and it sold to the first publisher I sent it to – Dorchester. I cried when they called to make the offer. That book has since been reprinted and is available still. MMC: Since you’re pubbed in multiple genres, do you approach writing a paranormal romance any differently than your romantic suspense? Karen: Not really. My books are all about the people. MMC: Let's talk a little about world-building. How did you come up with your backstory for The Pack series? And how does that setting affect your main characters? Karen: When I wrote the first Pack book, it was just an idea and I had no idea I’d end up writing this many. So some of the rules I set up in that book had to hold through all the others MMC: You had Mate of the Wolf coming out last month (July) as part of the Nocturne Bites, which are Nocturnes ebook. Can you give us a preview?Karen: Mate of the Wolf was such a fun story. The heroine is Pack and is sort of OCD MMC: Now in August you're having a Nocturne out, Dance of the Wolf. How does this story continue your series? Karen: Dance of the Wolf was another surprise book for me. As you know, I occasionally do single title books and I originally thought the heroine’s story would be single title. The only problem, when I was working on the hero (who I modeled after the House MD character), he kept insisting he was Pack. So the book ended up being a Nocturne. Karen: Usually when I come up with an idea for a book (and it wasn’t originally planned to be a series), one of the characters sort of appears in my mind. The heroine of One Eye Open, which was the first book of the Pack series, just showed up one day. I wrote the book with Silhouette in mind, but also well aware I could do the story as a larger, single title paranormal if they weren’t interested. Luckily, Leslie Wainger loved the concept and bought the book based on three chapters and a synopsis. Karen: Every book has its challenges. Writing Dance, I had to be careful as the hero wanted to be really, really dark. I had to rein him in a few times. MMC: What’s your favorite aspect of the book? Karen: The sexual anticipation. These people are really, really hot for each other. MMC: What attracts you about the werewolf characters you write about? Karen: I don’t know – they just show up MMC: Let's say you've just landed a movie deal, and you get to pick the actor who'll play Dr. Jared Gies. Who would you pick and why? Karen: That’s easy. Hugh Laurie. Karen: Emotion. I know as a reader, when I come across a story or a movie which moves me to tears, I know it’s a good one. MMC: What keeps you writing day after day? Karen: The characters – people – won’t leave me alone MMC: How about future releases in the Pack series, can you give us a preview? Karen: Oh yes! I just turned in a book I call Wild Wolf (not sure what title it will eventually end up with). The heroine is a feral shifter – meaning she lives in the wild, trying to be more wolf than human. The hero is part of a secret group of shifters called Protectors. Their job is to find feral shifters and rehabilitate them. If the Feral is a danger to society or the Pack, the Protector must eliminate them. It was a unique story in that both characters are Pack – usually one is human. MMC: Now for the fun questions. What's something that your readers may not know about you? Karen: I want to learn to rollerblade – bought a pair and everything – but am a big chicken (and clutz!) Plus my family made so much fun of me for buying them, I stuck them in the closet where they’ve been for over a year. MMC: Do you have any obsessions? Collections? Karen: I collect stuffed dogs. Every time I go on vacation, I buy one. My collection is not out of hand yet. Oh, and books. I just pared down that particular collection to make room – Gave away eight huge shopping bags full of books. MMC: When not writing, how do you relax? Karen: We have a camping trailer and a lot on a local lake. I like to go there with my husband and my dogs and fish and kayak and relax. It’s in the country and I love it there! MMC: Do you have a favorite food/beverage/music do you always have on hand while you're writing? Karen: Not really. I got one of those music systems you can plug your IPOD into and I listen to a variety of music. For the book I just finished (A Silhouette Romantic Suspense called Perfect Man), I listened to LeeAnn Rimes and Suglarland a lot. MMC: Do you have a newsletter, blog, or website where fans can read about you and your books? Karen: I blog mostly on my Myspace site (myspace.com/karenwhiddon) and occasionally on my website KarenWhiddon.com. There is a place on my website where you can sign up for a newsletter. If I ever get to quit the day job, I will do a newsletter, but I don’t right now. ------ Contest Time! Want to win a copy of Dance of the Wolf?
Ms. Whiddon is giving a signed copy of it. To win, all you have to do is leave a comment or question here. A winner will be chosen among posters. Remember this contest ends tomorrow at mid-day! Labels: interviews |

| As a child, today's guest didn't write “kid” stories, preferring something more dramatic and dark. Even as a teenager, when other girls were reading Laura Ingalls Wilder and Judy Blume, she was immersing herself in Stephen King and Jack London. So considering her fiction preferences, it was no surprise her first short stories were tales of horror, and her first novel, penned at the age of 12, was an Alaskan wilderness story with a wolf hero. Eventually, she discovered other writers like Robert Jordan, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and Mary Stewart, and devoured every novel she could find. Then she read straight historical fiction. After exhausting her supply, a longtime friend from my Air Force days came to the rescue with something she never thought I’d read - historical romance. Thus began a passion for, well, passion. She wanted to write romances, and she wanted to see them in print. She worked on some military and NWS technical manuals. As her writing improved, she began to sell her work to print magazines. Recently, I sold a series of dark paranormal romances, Demonica, to Warner. The Midnight Moon Café has the pleasure to present Larissa Ione. MMC: Welcome to the Midnight Moon Café, Larissa. When did you first become interested in writing paranormal romances? Larissa: Thanks for having me! I'm thrilled to be here! As far as when I became interested in writing paranormal romances, well, to be honest, I've always been interested…I just didn't think I could do it. See, my favorite book and movie genres are paranormal and science fiction. Love both. But there's always been something seriously sexy about the paranormal – vampires, werewolves, things that go bump in the night…they all just reach out and grab you. The, uh, grabbing, might be scary instead of pleasurable, but either way, the experience is intense. And it's that primal response, the rush of adrenaline, that draws people like me. So really, I've always been interested in writing paranormal romances. And then I fell in love with a certain vampire named Angel. Once that happened, I knew that I needed to create my own dark world and my own dark heroes to fall in love with. MMC: Who influenced you the most in your writing? Larissa: I think my earliest, most influential person was Stephen King. I started reading him at an early age (Salem's Lot was my very first,) and I knew I wanted to be just like him when I grew up. And sure enough, some of my very first stories were tales of terror. Once I found romance, my interests changed, but I never forgot my roots. It wasn't until I started writing paranormal romance that I let Stephen King's influence start seeping into my thoughts again, and I swore that I would not hold anything back when it came to letting the darkness in my voice out. Larissa: Well, one day I was watching an episode of Angel, and he got hurt. He needed to go to a hospital, but being a vampire, well…the hospital thing wasn't happening. At the time, I'd been writing paramedic heroes and heroines because I love emergency medicine. So I started thinking…what if demons came together to found a hospital where those injured vampires, werewolves, and demons who had been injured or who fell ill could go? What if Buffy The Vampire Slayer met Grey's Anatomy? The result was Underworld General, a hospital staffed by underworld creatures. The setting creates a focal point for the three demon brothers who built the hospital, and it proves to be a sanctuary for them, as well. At UG, they are safe from the world around them. They also know that no matter what, the hospital will always be common ground for the brothers, who love each other, but who are very different and often at violent odds. MMC: What sort of research went into it? Larissa: Honestly, not a lot. I already have a medical background – I became an EMT a few years ago, and I've researched medicine for years (for fun.) So medical research mainly involved refreshing my knowledge with my dozens of medical texts. For the demon stuff, I read books about demons in various religions, which was fascinating. And lucky for me, there are lots of shows on The History Channel about demons, as well. I think I must have about twenty programs recorded. MMC: The first Demonica novel in this series is Pleasure Unbound, which came out back last month. Tell us what this story is about. Larissa: Here's a blurb: Someone is killing demons–someone other than the Aegis demon slayers, anyway. Now Eidolon, a doctor at Underworld General as well as a demon whose instincts to mate are growing stronger, must pair up with a sexy Aegis Guardian named Tayla Mancuso to learn the truth behind the killings. But Tayla has her own agenda. Her assignment is to find a way to destroy Underworld General. When she falls for Eidolon, who has shown her erotic pleasures she’d never dreamed of, she must face the horrors of her past and choose between becoming one of the very creatures she’s hunted–or death. MMC: What challenges have you faced in the process of writing Pleasure Unbound? Larissa: The biggest challenge came in trying to write a hero who was a demon…but who was honorable. In my Demonica world, good and bad is not clear-cut, but even so, I tried to keep the demon world sitting firmly behind the line dividing good and evil. So creating a doctor who is both a demon and healer was challenging. I needed him to follow a strict code, yet be true to his demon species' nature. Let me tell you, I had some very frustrating moments with him! (Though I'd say that my frustrations were nothing compared to what the heroine faces with him. *g*) MMC: What’s your favorite aspect of the book? Larissa: The medical detail! There's actually very little, but I've always had a thing for doctors, so the fact that I got to write paranormal AND doctors? A dream come true! MMC: What do you think is the key writing a truly memorable story? Larissa: There are so many things an author can do to create a truly memorable book, but one thing really sticks out for me; taking a story to an extreme, whether it's with emotion, plot, or detail. When you do that, people tend to have extreme reactions – love or hate, but either way, they remember. MMC: BTW, I love the new version of the caduceus shown in the book cover. Tell us a bit about it. Who came up with the idea for it? Larissa: Thank you! I just love that little caduceus, so much that I had it tattooed on my ankle! *g* The story behind it…well, when I first sold the Demonica series, I knew I was going to be dealing with some differences between a human hospital and a demon hospital. Even simple things, like medical symbols, were going to be issues. I figured that the human caduceus – generally a staff encircled by a snake, with two angel wings flanking the top – wasn't going to work for an underworld medical facility. So I asked Justin Knupp, of Stonecreek Media, to design something more appropriate. I told him that instead of a staff I wanted a dagger, instead of a gentle-looking serpent I wanted vicious vipers, and instead of angel wings I wanted bat wings. Within a couple of weeks, he'd designed a wonderful caduceus. And when Grand Central Publishing (then Warner Books,) asked for cover design input, I asked if they could use the caduceus as the series symbol. Bless their hearts, they did it! I swore that if they did, I'd have the design tattooed somewhere on my body, and in July, I followed through. *g* MMC: Are we going to see more books in the Demonica series? (Here’s hoping for Shades and Wraith stories!!!) Can you give us a preview? Larissa: Yes! You are going to be seeing lots of Shade and Wraith to come! *g* Shade is next, in Desire Unchained (March '09), and Wraith follows with Passion Unleashed (April '09). Expect lots of darkness and angst in Shade's book. His reluctant heroine doesn't like him much, but they find themselves bound together by chains only death can break. Strangely enough, Wraith's book is the lightest of the three, even though he's the most tortured of the brothers. Of course, "light" is a relative term, since all of these books are pretty dark. But my boy Wraith handles life with lots of "I don't give a crap" attitude, so when he suddenly has to give a crap, he ends up in lots of trouble with a heroine who definitely doesn't take his crap. I have to say, I had SO much fun with these books! MMC: When and where do you get your best writing done? Larissa: I probably get the most writing done in my den, but I rarely write there. It's just too dark and lonely. So I write on my couch in the living room, with my son and husband bugging me constantly! I tend to get the most writing done in the mornings, but sometimes I get going in the evenings and just can't stop. I love those days, because I really can pump out massive pages at night. It just doesn't happen very often, unfortunately! MMC: Now to the fun questions. What's something that your readers may not know about you? Larissa: I'm afraid of spiders, balloons, and those little cardboard cans that things like refrigerator biscuits and cinnamon rolls come in. And yet, I have no problem picking up a poisonous snake even after it tries to bite me… MMC: Do you have any obsessions? Collections? Larissa: Star Trek! I'm a HUGE Trekkie! I used to have thousands of dollars worth of memorabilia. I've been to several conventions, and I even have a Star Trek tattoo. MMC: When not writing, how do you relax? Larissa: I read and watch movies. I love movies!!! MMC: What’s your favorite guilty pleasure? Larissa: Wow, there are so many! But probably…soaps. When I have time, I watch soap operas. All My Children, One Life To Live, and General Hospital. MMC: Do you have a newsletter, blog, or website where fans can read about you and your books? Larissa: I do! My website is www.LarissaIone.com, my blog is www.LarissaIone.com/soapbox, and to sign up for my newsletter. MMC: Thanks for dropping by! Larissa: Thank you for having me! It's been fun! --- Contest Time! Labels: interviews |

![]() Sure, laughter is the best medicine, but did you know that humor is also a powerful tool for flirting? According to the Center for Interpersonal Studies, it is almost impossible to flirt successfully or enjoyably without it. Yet it can easily backfire if abused or misused. On the positive side, their studies have shown that people who use humor in social encounters are perceived as more likable, and that both trust and attraction increase when a light-hearted approach is used. Judicious use of humor can reduce anxiety and establish a relaxed mood which helps a relationship to develop more rapidly. A slightly risqué joke can help to escalate the level of intimacy in a flirtatious conversation. On the negative side, inappropriate use of humor can kill a promising flirtation stone dead in a matter of seconds. Making a risqué joke or comment too early, for example, before a reasonable degree of intimacy has been established, is the verbal equivalent of a butt-pinch. Men are generally more likely to make this kind of fatal mistake than women. Women, however, need to be even more cautious in their use of sexual humor, as men will be inclined to interpret this as a sign of sexual availability. While it is clearly important to avoid causing offense or giving misleading signals, humor is an essential element of flirtation. Flirting is by definition a light-hearted, playful form of interaction. A flirtatious encounter may eventually lead to a 'serious', long-term relationship, but too much seriousness in the early stages is off-putting. Even in the longer term, a capacity for light-hearted playfulness is important. It is no accident that so many single people seeking partners through the personal ads include 'gsoh' (good sense of humor) in their requirements. Humor can clearly help to reduce tension and awkwardness in the early stages of a flirtatious encounter. In the section on opening lines, we advised the use of phrases which are universally recognized as 'conversation-starters', such as comments on the weather. A touch of humor can make these openers even more effective. There is no need for elaborate attempts at wit: a simple twist such as "Lovely day, isn't it?" during a torrential downpour will raise a smile if your target finds you attractive. (If your target does not find you attractive, more elaborate efforts will be no more effective.) Once some degree of mutual attraction has been established, the use of humor in flirtatious conversations tends to come naturally, as both parties are motivated to keep their target amused and interested. Our natural instinct is to try to make the other person smile. We need constant reassurance that we are liked and appreciated by the object of our attraction, and smiles and laughter provide that reassurance. One particular form of humor, playful teasing, is particularly common in flirtatious encounters. This is because playful teasing allows partners to increase the 'personal' content of the exchange, while keeping the tone light-hearted and non-serious, thus escalating the level of disclosure and intimacy in a non-threatening manner. Men respond particularly well to this form of humor, as it closely resembles the 'mock-arguments' and good-humored exchanges of insults which are their normal means of expressing friendship among themselves. The most common mistakes in flirtatious use of humor involve opposite extremes. Men are more likely to over-use humor or monopolize joke-telling, and fail to notice that their companion is bored or frustrated. Women sometimes have a tendency to under-use humor – to adopt a serious tone when their companion would be more comfortable with light-hearted banter. So tweak your funny bone and start using it when you flirt! Labels: humor, weekend flirt |

| Today's guest has always been fascinated with dragons, so she has never understood why they have to be the bad guys. This is why in her Dragonfire series, her heroes shapeshift into dragons. Deborah Cooke has an honors degree in history, with a focus on medieval studies. She is an avid reader of medieval vernacular literature, fairy tales and fantasy novels, and has written over thirty romance novels under the names Claire Cross and Claire Delacroix. Nowadays, Deborah makes her home in Canada with her husband, a number of incomplete knitting projects and a lot of overgrown houseplants. When she isn't writing, she can be found knitting, sewing or hunting for vintage patterns. The Midnight Moon Café is proud to present Deborah Cooke. MMC: Welcome to the Midnight Moon Café, Deborah. When did you first become interested in writing paranormal romances? Deborah: I've written paranormal and fantasy romance for a long time, but in the 1990's, it wasn't nearly as popular as it is now. You can peek at my websites to see those older titles. My Claire Cross time travels were Once Upon A Kiss, The Last Highlander, Love Potion #9 and The Moonstone. My Claire Delacroix medieval paranormals were The Sorceress, The Magician's Quest and Enchanted. Because paranormal and fantasy weren't selling as well, I stopped writing it and focused on "straight" romance. A few years, a friend of mine and I met for lunch - we joked that now that fantasy romance was selling, neither of us were writing it. We laughed together, but I thought "hmmmmmm" on the way home. I wrote a proposal for a new paranormal romance series shortly after that. MMC: Let's talk a little about world-building in your Dragonfire series. How did you come up with your backstory for this original series? And how does that setting affect your main characters? Deborah: One of the things that's really exciting about the current market is that fantasy romance takes more from the fantasy genre than it once did. Specifically, readers are looking for more complex world-building, which for me, is one of the most exciting parts of writing a book. I love creating fictional worlds and really got into it with my medievals - it was frustrating in the 1990's that fantasy romance showed less of that. Now I'm in seventh heaven! As for this particular backstory, I am a medievalist deep in my heart, and I've always loved stories of dragons. I think they're amazing creatures, and frankly, a hero who can turn into a dragon is a lot more interesting to me than one who can turn into a wolf (although I've written that too.) With all the legends and stories about dragons, there are a lot of potential elements to weave into the hidden world of the dragon shape shifters, which is a lot of fun. The main impact on the Pyr heroes is that they each have a whopper of a secret. One of the first things I figure out about each one is how he feels about his genetic legacy of being a shapeshifter and what his relationship is with the other Pyr. Is he on the team? Or would he rather be alone? Does he enjoy the power of his body? Or does he resent being "different"? Answers to questions like that give me good insight into that Pyr hero's character before we start - then, of course, I have to find the perfect heroine to challenge him. Deborah: Because I think dragons are sexy. My Pyr heroes are rich, powerful, good looking in either form, protective of those weaker than themselves (i.e. everyone) and trying to save the world. That works for me! MMC: The first Dragonfire novel is Kiss of Fire, which came out back in February. Why don’t you tell us a bit about it? Deborah: I thought Quinn's story was a good introduction to the world of the Pyr, because Quinn didn't want to be Pyr and he didn't want to be involved with other Pyr. He'd secluded himself for centuries and essentially denied his own nature. I thought that we could all learn about this hidden world together. Of course, he couldn't remain reclusive, not when the Pyr are bracing for war and he's inherited the responsibility of being the Smith to his kind. Quinn is a romantic, though - a tough artisan blacksmith of a romantic - so I knew that his firestorm would draw him out of his hiding place, in search of destined love. Once he'd revealed himself and realized that Sara was being hunted, he had to engage with the Pyr to defend her. I liked his noble urges and the conflict within him, and I liked that Sara the pragmatist was precisely the kind of woman he needed. Their story was a lot of fun to write. MMC: The second installment in this series, Kiss of Fury, just came out two days ago (Aug. 5th). How does this story continue your series? MMC: What challenges have you faced in the process of writing Kiss of Fury? Deborah: The big challenge is stage management. Each time we step deeper into the world of the Pyr, there is more backstory to carry forward, and there are more characters to keep track of. Even linked books are usually written so that a new reader can begin with any one of the series and generally understand what's going on, so keeping all of those details straight as well as keeping them from overwhelming the main romance is always a challenge with a linked series. I've written a number of linked series before, though, so I have some coping strategies worked out. First and foremost is my big binder - I keep track of every continuing character in there, as well as all the details of the world and its mythology that have been already mentioned. MMC: What’s your favorite aspect of the book? Deborah: There are so many aspects I like that it's hard to pick a favourite! How about three favourites? I love blending fact and fiction, so taking old stories about dragons, spinning them a bit, and working them into the stories about the Pyr is one of my favourite things to do. I love my villains, particularly when they're really sneaky and fighting with each other. Of course, I really love my heroes. Watching Donovan surrender to love was just the best. MMC: What do you like most about each of your leading characters? Deborah: I like that they're both tough and independent thinkers. I love that Alex is determined to face her fears and conquer them. I love how she teaches Donovan to face his own vulnerability and turn it into a strength. It's really magical to me how these two are so much more together than the sum of the parts. They're good for each other! MMC: What do you think is the key writing a truly memorable story? Deborah: I think it's the characters. They have to be sympathetic, which usually means they're both strong and vulnerable. They have to be dimensional and be smart (not 2D2L) and admirable. As a reader, I want to read about characters I'd like to have as friends. As a writer, I want to write about those characters. MMC: Who is your sexiest Pyr to date and why? Deborah: I have to admit that I always fall in love with my heroes. So, while I was smitten with Quinn, and then Donovan, and then Erik, Dragonfire hero #4 has already got my number. And no, I won't tell you yet who he is! MMC: Let's say you've just landed a movie deal, and you get to pick the actor who'll play one of your Pyr, who would you pick and why? Deborah: Oh, I stink at this game. (Maybe I don't watch enough movie!) But while I was writing Kiss Of Fury, I had this vision of Donovan as a pumped James Dean. With auburn hair. Maybe that works for you. Or we can open the game to everyone. Who do you think should be cast as Quinn? As Donovan? As Erik? MMC: The third book on this wonderful series, Kiss of Fate, is slated to come out in February 2009. Can you give us a preview?Deborah: Erik and Eileen's book was a real challenge, but it was worth it. My conviction all along was that Erik had been wounded by love and so was determined to never love again. And really, since he's a Pyr and had already had one firestorm, he didn't have to face love again. At least that's what Erik thought. When I realized that his first love had committed suicide over a misunderstanding between them, I understood Erik's guilt as well and had an idea for a reconciliation. Eileen is the reincarnation of Erik's mate, so he gets another firestorm, even though he doesn't want it. And Eileen has to confront not only her own issues with emotional involvement but unravel the roots to that in the history of her past life. It's a really emotional book for me - lots of action too - but I've so happy with it. You can believe that Eileen had some work to do to thaw out Erik, never mind to get him to confide in her - it was amazing what that Pyr knew, once he started talking! I can't wait to hear what everyone else thinks of Kiss Of Fate! MMC: Now to the fun questions. What's something that your readers may not know about you? Deborah: Many people don't know that I write under three names. I've written historical romances as Claire Delacroix (http://www.delacroix.net) as well as time travel romance and contemporary romance as Claire Cross (http://www.clairecross.com). Now I'm writing as Deborah Cooke! MMC: Do you have any obsessions? Collections? Deborah: I knit. A lot. So, my biggest "collection" would be my knitting wool stash. Don't go in the spare room alone. It's just not safe. MMC: When not writing, how do you relax? Deborah: Knit, knit, knit! I garden as well, but it's more fun to knit than pull weeds. MMC: What’s your favorite guilty pleasure? Deborah: Chocolate. Isn't that everyone's guilty pleasure? If you don't like the dark European stuff, you can give yours to me. I'll have to keep it off my knitting wool, but I'll manage somehow! MMC: Do you have a newsletter, blog, or website where fans can read about you and your books? Deborah: The Dragonfire site is at http://www.deborahcooke.com. I put covers up there when I get them, as well as the cover copy and an excerpt. My blog is called Alive & Knitting, at http://www.delacroix.net/blog. I do have a listserve, too, to which I send a message about once a month, usually at the beginning of the month. It's on Yahoo Groups, and is called Chestwick. Here's a link. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/chestwick/ MMC: Thanks for dropping by! Deborah: Thanks for inviting me! I'll pop back around later today to answer any questions. Maybe we should give a book away. Tell you what - ask a question or make a comment and you'll be eligible to win a signed copy of Kiss OF Fury. ----- Contest Time! Labels: interviews |
