Midnight Brew presents Gena Showalter
Today's guest sold her first book at the age of 27. Four years later, is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of thirteen books, with eleven more on the way in a thrilling blend of genres. Two of these being urban fantasy and paranormal romance. Her novels have appeared in Cosmopolitan Magazine, MTV, Seventeen Magazine, and have been translated in French, Italian and Korean. The Midnight Moon Café has the honor to present Gena Showalter! MMC: Welcome to the Midnight Moon Café, Gena. When did you first become interested in writing paranormal romances? Gena: Thanks for having me. I read Warrior’s Woman by Johanna Lindsey and Beyond the Highland Mist by Karen Marie Moning, and both books introduced me to the wonders of the paranormal. I was instantly hooked, stories of my own suddenly floating around in my head. MMC: Let's talk a little about world-building in Lords of the Underworld series. How did you come up with your backstory for this series? And how does that setting affect your main characters? MMC: What was the inspiration for this series? Gena: I had never liked the myth of Pandora’s box, where one curious female was blamed for all the world’s misery. I decided to rewrite it and blame men. (But according to Author Talk, I did it because I hate men. LOL) MMC: There are 3 previous books in this series – Darkest Night and Darkest Kiss. For those who aren’t familiar with these, tell us a bit about them. Gena: Darkest Night features the warrior possessed by the demon of Violence. Maddox is the one who has been cursed to die every night only to awaken the next morning knowing he has to die again. His love interest is able to stand in one location and hear every conversation that has ever taken place there. Her arrival brings a powerful enemy back into the warriors’ lives. MMC: There is a prequel – a novella - available in ebook format from Harlequin, The Darkest Fire. Why was Geryon’s story released as a novella? Gena: We had pushed the release of Darkest Night back by eight months to give me time to write the other two books in the series so that they could be released closely together. I didn’t want readers to have to wait that long so I decided to write a short story to give them a peek at how Pandora’s box came to be and exactly what evil was caged inside. There just wasn’t time to give Geryon a full-length book, not if we wanted the story to come before Darkest Night. MMC: Now Darkest Pleasure is the third installment in this series. How does this story continues your series? Gena: This book features the warrior possessed by the demon of Pain, a man forbidden to know pleasure. Actually pain is his pleasure. Reyes is in love with a mortal woman, Dannika, who as been marked for death by his best friend, the keeper of Wrath. In this book, more is learned about the box, the artifacts needed to find the box, the gods and the Hunters intent on killing the Lords of the Underworld. Gena: This was a very emotionally draining book to write. Reyes is by far my most tortured character, both physically and mentally, and delving into the darker aspects of his need for pain for were not always pleasant. But I did it because I wanted to show exactly what he goes through every day. MMC: What attracts you about the paranormal characters you write about? Gena: I love the possibilities. Anything I can think up, I can write. MMC: What do you think is the key writing a truly memorable story? Gena: Characters that come alive. Everything always boils down to characters. MMC: Let's say you've just landed a movie deal, and you get to pick the actor who'll play one of your Lord of the Underworld, who would you pick and why? Gena: I’m just not sure! I could name the actresses I’d like to see in the female roles no problem. But the men? They’re just so larger than life to me. MMC: The question that all Lord of the Underworld fans are asking is, would there be other books in this series? *g* Gena: Oh, yes. I plan to write a book for every Lord. In fact, I just finished writing Sabin’s story, The Darkest Whisper, a May 2009 release. Sabin is a man who places victory above all else, even love. At first I had no idea who to pair him with and wasn’t going to write his story until further down the line. But one night I dreamed his heroine and I was utterly fascinated by her. I had to tell their story next. And just to tease you...this book will finally delve into the lives of Gideon and Torin. Gena: My story features Glory Tawdry, a love witch who is given a magic pen. Anything she writes with it comes true -- and she’s out to torture Falon, once a prince of the Fae and the man who broke her heart. MMC: Now to the fun questions. What's something that your readers may not know about you? Gena: I can’t watch horror movies. Ever. MMC: Do you have a favorite food/beverage/music do you always have on hand while you're writing? Gena: I am addicted to coffee and water. I hate soda. MMC: When not writing, how do you relax? I’m not even sure I know what that word means. But when I’m not writing, you can find me on the phone with BFF and fellow author Jill Monroe, reading or snuggling up to my three dogs. MMC: What’s your favorite guilty pleasure? Gena: Chocolate chip cookies fresh from the oven! MMC: Do you have a newsletter, blog, or website where fans can read about you and your books? Gena: I’m everywhere! www.genashowalter.blogspot.com www.genashowalter.com www.lordsoftheunderworld.net ---- Contest Time! Here is The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld Series #1).
Ms. Showalter is giving away a copy of it among those who leave comments. This contest will end tomorrow at mid-day. Labels: interviews |

post a commentHi Gena!! Great interview and thanks for writing such fabulous books!! Continued success for many years to come!
*hugs*
Welcome Gena. Enjoyed reading the interview and have had the pleasure of reading many of your books. Great stories! Continued success and looking forward to reading more of your books in the future. Maybe you would be willing to share some of those wonderful warm chocolate chip cookies...love them also.
I just wanted to say hi and great interview. I'm also on Candace Havens site and read Darkest Fire and then had to go buy the other books right away. :)
(so please don't enter me in the contest)
I love the stories and can't wait for more.
Hi Gena. Great interview. Your Lords of the Underworld series sounds great. I love the covers.
I already have this book so don't enter me into the drawing! I just wanted to say thank you, MMC for featuring Ms. Showalter! I've been following her work for a while, and though Playing With Fire is still one of my very favorites from her, she's getting better and better with each book. This series seems to have taken the gold! :D
i'm new to the paranormal. Whether I win this contest or not, i'll be headed to the library to pick one of yours up. Great interview ladies. I look forward to reading. :)
I already have the book too, but I wanted to say how much it ROCKED!!!! I loved it.
Thank you so much for being our guest, Gena. I love your books and am eagerly awaiting your anthology book, Mysteria Lane. How could I not be captivated by a witch with a magic spell pen? LOL.
I could write out checks all day for any amount, and every one of them would be good. :P
Wishing you many happy sales,
Cass
Fantastic interview!! I have been trying to get Darkest Night from the library but so far all they can say is either it's lost on another shelf or someone never brought it back (rolls eyes).
I'm so glad to hear there's someone else out there that can't watch horror movies. Lol my friends think I'm off my rocker since I can imagine a horrible torture scene etc but if they bring out something like Texas Chainsaw Massacre I'm gone like a flash. I guess that's it though: I can keep myself sleepless with my imagination so I don't need any outside help.
Anyhow I look forward to reading the series once I find the first book at the library.
I have unfortunately never read any of your books Gena but I've seen them all over the place. But reading this interview has shown me I've been really missing out. I'm adding your books to my wishlist.
I love the book covers. They are so cool. Paranormal stories are my thing. I'm definitely going to have to check out the "darkest" series.
Hi Gena,
I really enjoyed the interview and your books have the most amazing covers.
Hi Gena, so glad I could find you here! I'm so excited for this book, congratulations and keep writing!
The idea of the "need for pain" intrigues me. I need to read more. Thanks for this interview.
Excellent interview, Gena! I enjoyed reading it. Your books sound like great reads!
Great interview! I love the cover for this book. Gorgeous. Sounds fantastic! :)
Gena, you know I love everything you write! DARKEST NIGHT was fantastic, and I can hardly wait to get my grubby little hands on all the others!
Hope to see you at RWA!
Light,
Nancy Haddock
Great interview now I need to run out and get a copy of The Darkest Night.
hello,
my first visit to the cafe!
and an informative visit it is, as i am unfamiliar with ms. showalter's work even though i have seen her name in cyberspace. i need a nap just reading about her amazing output. love the pandora's box reversal inspiration! for that alone i'll make a point of picking up a title next time my juniors allow me a book store pit stop.
Hi MMC and Gena!
Gosh, just gives me goosebumps just to see the covers of these!!! I'm excited about these and look forward to reading these!! I still hope they put the ebook one thats a short story, in print some day too!
My favorite of yours was PLAYING WITH FIRE. I laughed at times whe she got the apartment and even forest trees on fire when she was practicing her skills. It was such a blast to read it! Will there be more coming from this series from you? Only ones I haven't gotten was your young adult ones, but I'm thinking of giving them a try! I read the blurbs and think I'd enjoy them even though I'm old, and not a YA, LOL.
It would be a joy to be in the contest! Thanks!
Oh I wanted to ask you Gena, how did you get 3 books out in a row!!?? Was it harder to do this? When more come out in the series, will they come out like this as well? Know its appreciated all you write!
Awesome interview! Thanks for visiting us, Gena. :)
Great interview! The Darkest Night sounds great!
I enjoyed reading your interview and wow...I just love those covers on your books. Adding them to my wish list.
Hey Gena,
Enjoy reading your books and The Darkest Night is on my to buy list. The cover is fabulous.
Great Interview! I will definitely have to read Gena's novels.
Hi, Gena! Thanks for a terrific interview! I've been hearing nothing but raves for your latest! I'll be excited to read it for myself :)
Hi M.! Glad you found us on the web.
Hope you'll come back for a visit. We always have something fun or interesting going on here. ::wink::
I love your series, Gena. I can't believe there's a rumor about you hating men. Changing things to suit ourselves is what writers do. :)
Thank you so much guys and so sorry for the late reply! There will indeed be more in the Playing With Fire world. Belle's next story is Twice as Hot and it's a Sept 09 release!
I was able to do the three back to back books because we pushed back the release date of the first by 8 months and the second by something like 13, giving me all the time I needed to get the 2nd and 3rd written. It was still tough, balancing all the revisions and edits, each book in different stages, but totally worth it!
