I'm celebrating St. Patrick's Day, and all green beer here at the Cafe is free! So belly up to the bar and have a pint on me!
Now gather round and I'll tell you a few facts about Lá Fhéile Pádraig (Saint Patrick's Day).
Did you know that St. Patrick was actually a Welshman? Aye! He was born in Wales around 390 C.E., but t'was captured by pirates and taken to be a slave in Ireland. He managed to escape but later returned to the Emerald Isle as a missionary. Upon his return, he lit the sacred fire at Slane, near Tara–which was the holy seat of sacred power, as all conquerors of Eire had done before him, so as not to offend both the pagan Gods and Goddesses, and the Faerie Folk! Aye! 'Tis true I speak.
Of course, the king and his Druid priests saw what he was about, and climbed the hill to challenge him! But 'tis said that Patrick took himself to be a druid and called up a cloud of darkness and a great shaking of the earth frightened them away!
St. Patrick's Day became one of the most important holidays in Ireland. A time for revelry and feasting and drink within the middle of the Lenten fast. And at the end of the day comes the "drowning of the shamrock." The custom dictates that ye remove the lucky shamrock leaf ye wore all day upon yer coat and place it at the bottom of the final mug of beer for the last toast, then toss the leaf and a bit of yer beer over yer left shoulder for luck all the rest of the year through.
To all our friends and readers, I wish you Sláinte! To your health! And may good luck be with ye!Labels: beer, folklore, holiday, irish |
