MMC: What interests you the most in writing paranormal romances?
Cora: I like the variety of it. There are so many possibilities for romance; so many different settings you can incorporate into the story. It's what drew me to the genre in the first place. I've always liked fiction with a darker element, and I can have that in paranormal romance.
MMC: Where do you find inspiration for your work?
Cora: Inspiration comes from many sources: books, movies, listening to music, daydreaming… The ideas behind two of my more popular stories came to me while driving. It's easier to come up with ideas when I'm running on instinct, or doing something mundane like folding laundry. Even people watching at the mall can lead to a writing idea.
MMC: With an active family at home, how do you mange to find time to write? Are you a disciplined writer? Or do you grab minutes wherever you can to write?
Cora: Some days I don't find time to write, and that can be very frustrating. But I do what I can, and I never give up. Most days I catch a few minutes here and there. Or I'll write for about an hour or so in the morning, put my manuscript up for the day, and concentrate on getting in a longer writing session once the kids are asleep for the night. It's a challenge, but my family understands. There are times I can get away with sporadic writing, but when it comes down to deadlines, they know to leave me to my devices.
MMC: How much time do you dedicate to research for your stories? Do you research as you go?
Cora: I'm typically a research as you go, and as you need it, kind of girl. Years ago, before I was ever published, I used to go on long research binges, end up with information overkill, and still I wasn't getting the writing done. I didn't even like the researching, so I've since learned to do it in smaller doses.
MMC: Your latest book Dominant Territory is part of your Werekind series, correct? How does this story continue your series and integrate with the short story, free downloads you wrote?
Cora: Dominant Territory is book three in the Werekind series. In this story, the hero, Drake, is a member of the Silver werekind pack run by Cole Holbrook, the alpha male from
Crossing Borders. Drake is best friends with Chase, the hero from my freebie story
Under A Midnight Moon, so you can expect Chase and Betsey to make an appearance in
Dominant Territory. Mitch from
Heart on Fire is a member of this pack, as well. He is also mentioned in the book.
MMC: How do you come up with your backstory? And how does that setting affect your main characters?
Cora: Backstory comes more easily to me than some other elements of writing. It's like the old saying goes: we all have to come from somewhere. It's no different for characters. Their pasts affect how they react to situations, just like the setting they are thrust into affects their lives.
My characters are pretty much decided on when I start writing. I think of the character now, and I can get a pretty good idea how they must've grown up. I try to take that into consideration when writing individual scenes– What would that character do? How would I react if that happened to me?
With some characters, the lines between right and wrong blur. I realize they would make choices that I otherwise wouldn't. However, when I also understand their motivation for making their choices, I know the backstory fits. I know then I've done something right. I've created a realistic character.
MMC: Who is your sexiest hero to date and why?
Cora: Mm…I'd have to say Luke from
Bonding Experience is probably my sexiest character. There is something about him, his persistence, and daring that I find extremely attractive.
MMC: Let's say you've just landed a movie deal, and you get to pick the actor who'll play the hero from your upcoming release,
Dominant Territory. Who would you pick? And why?
Cora: Drake is definitely a fantasy man. He's tall, blond, and dangerously good looking. You don't find a lot of blond men in books and movies anymore, so it's hard to say who I'd cast for him. Brad Pitt?
MMC: For those not familiar with your work, which book would you recommend to read first and why?
Cora: I would recommend reading
Crossing Borders first. It's the first book in the series, and while it seems logical to start there, I look at it more as a series sampler book for readers. It's quick, to the point, and hot. It's a good book for testing out the series to see if it's something you'd want to read.
MMC: Can you share with readers what you're working on next?
Cora: I'm working a demon romance right now, and there are a few other side projects too. I also have a skeletal workup for the sequel to my vampire novella Wicked Temptation that I'm hoping I can get around to fleshing out sometime soon.
MMC: Is a man sexier with or without his clothes? ;)
Cora: It depends on the man. Some guys look great in next to nothing, and others can drop me from twenty paces in jeans and a T-shirt. What can I say? I don't really know what makes a man sexy, but I sure recognize a sexy man when I see him.
MMC: Do you have a newsletter, blog, or website where fans can read about you and your books?
Cora: I have a website at
http://www.corazane.com/ that is kept updated on a month by month basis. My blog at
http://corazane.blogspot.com/ is reachable directly, or through my website. I blog almost daily–everything from what I'm currently working on, to family life, as well as all my latest book release information as it becomes available. I have a periodic newsletter signup on my blog as well. And of course, I can be reached right here on a day to day basis at the Midnight Moon Café. :-)
